Today is the 3rd anniversary of Hurricane Katrina's catastrophic hit on the Louisiana/Mississippi/Alabama coast. Unfortunately, I think that people living in New Orleans should mark the anniversary of Katrina by getting the heck out of the city. You live at the bottom of a bowl, ten or so feet below sea level. This is not natural. Nature wants to fill up this bowl with huge quantities of Gulf of Mexico sea water. There is a storm capable of doing that bearing down on you. If you live in New Orleans, I suggest you take a little Labor Day holiday--sooner, rather than later, to beat the rush--and get out of town. Gustav is going to come close to you, and there's no sense messing with a major hurricane capable of pushing a Category 3 storm surge to your doorstep. Don't test those Category 3 rated--but untested--levees. Conventional pre-Katrina wisdom suggested that the city needed 72 hours to evacuate. With the population about half of the pre-Katrina population, that lead time is about 60 hours. With Gustav likely to bring tropical storm force winds to the city by Monday afternoon, that means that tonight is a good time to start evacuating--Saturday morning at the latest. Voluntary evacuations have already begun, which is a good idea. |
A state of emergency has already been declared in Louisiana. If there were any interesting abandonments that hadn't been photographed yet, it's probably too late now. All the tracks seem to send Gustav to the west of NO, which would subject the city to the heaviest rains.
And right behind Gustav is Hanna. She seems to have set aside her plans for an East Coast vacation in favor of the Gulf of Mexico.
Meanwhile, here in Dallas, I filled up my tank with $3.27 gas... just in case. I figure if we all plan for the worst, nothing much will happen.

When Katrina was heading in, I was saying "God, not New Orleans..." Most people didn't realize that place is a punch bowl below sea level. The Mississippi wants to wander back and forth at the delta and you are spot on about it being a losing battle.

I'm back in Shreveport; she went to Dallas (where she's from). We tried to convince our neighbors to come with one of us since they didn't have family or friends anywhere to the north (they're all to the south), but they said they'd just drive until they found somewhere.  We're hoping they'll be ok. I've heard that all of the hotels from the coast up to Hot Springs are booked full; don't know how accurate that is.

They say on the news that all the Tyler hotels are full. Of course, I'm sure they jacked the rate up especially for these folks like they did last time, to serve you better of course.

No kidding on the rates thing; when I filled up my gas tank on Wednesday, gas was $3.49. When I topped it off Friday morning at the only place with gas left on our side of town, it had jumped to $3.89. It was $3.79 as far north as Whiteville yesterday (didn't stop again until I got home, so I don't know how it was after that). Ridiculous.
And Happiedaze, that's totally awesome of you.  If I hear of anyone and I can't put them up, I'll let you know. We don't have our neighbors' phone number, unfortunately.
