Drains that are just collection basins for sidewalk grates though, I've gone in two-three hours after it's stopped raining and the forecast says the rain isn't returning. A good hint is just to stop at one of the manhole covers and listen for the gurgling; and most importantly, have the balls to be willing to turn back if you get there and the water "isn't quite as low as you'd like", or the forecast "not quite so clear as you'd like". Depending on the size of the catch mat it can take a day or two for the system to completely flush itself. Also keep in mind, if your climbing down a drain with any kind of sanitary overflow.. it may stink to high hell if you go down right after a heavy storm. So for some, that might be another reason to give it a couple days. Just go check it out. But like everyone else said, if you get to a drain and it's still moving pretty good, don't push it. If you want to protect the locations you love to explore, don't talk about them online in public! Some drains need longer, but most will just be ankle or shin deep within a short time. Of course be careful and check the level before going too far. If your not comfortable with how it looks, feels or smells after rain, don't risk it, come back in a day or two. Personally I don't drain within 3-6 hours of light rain, 1-3 days from prolonged multi day rains or heavy falls.
