| | This weekend's exploration in Detroit < on 8/11/2008 1:33 AM >
| | | 8/9/08: Today, Josh and Nevion (from Canada) came into my area for some serious urban exploring We explored the West (newer) wing of the North Detroit General Hospital, the Gilewski Funeral Home and the grade school off of the I-75 service drive (I can't recall its name off hand) *North Detroit General Hospital- Unfortunately, there was no basement (i.e., morgue) to this wing of the building, but we did get to explore 3 out of the 4 floors. (We heard people, probably scrappers, on the 4th floor and decided against going further up). We saw/explored the old waiting room area, the Intensive Care Unit (which I think is the area where my dad was pronounced dead the night of April 19/20 of 1987), some side/office rooms (including a couple that had mattresses where, I suppose, the derelicts sleep) and bathrooms. We also found a couple of x-ray type machines that had been left behind as well as some hospital supplies. On the second floor we saw the kitchen and cafeteria as well as the blood lab. There were literally THOUSANDS of slides left in a cabinet as well as strewn across the floor! (I took one for a keepsake! ) We also found many confidential patient records strewn around. Broken glass, plaster, ceiling tiles, asbestos and dust was everywhere. Most of the ceiling tiles had been pulled down by scrappers. On the third floor, I found a couple of copiers that MAY still be functional. We also found the pathology lab, nurses lounge and various (what must have been) patients rooms. Also on the 3rd (?) floor we found hypodermic needles, tissues samples in jars and some medical reference books. Student's drawings were left on bulletin boards and there were still scrawlings that could be read on the chalkboards. I filmed and took photos at this location. *Gilewski Funeral Home- Nothing much has changed since I was in the building last August. I only had Josh take one pic of me in the embalming room plus I filmed a couple of minutes in one of the darkened funeral chapels. We went through it in about 15 minutes or less. I took one photo of the outside of the building as we walked away. *School off of I75 Service Drive I can't recall the name of this school, but it was a bit tricky to enter. Josh is more agile than I and he managed to jump up and grab a railing/fence piece on this raised platform of sorts. He then pulled himself up and came around and pushed open the front door for me. We explored (more or less) the entire building including classrooms, bathrooms, supply rooms, the gym, hallways and miscellaneous rooms. I was seriously shocked by the amount of textbooks (many never even unwrapped!) left behind as well as office supplies, disks, video tapes, globes, maps, floppy disks and even the paperwork in the student's own lockers! It was as if the place was simply evacuated w/ no one having the chance to get anything out beforehand. The toilets were all broken, a piano in one room was tipped over and paperwork was EVERYWHERE. Student's drawings were left on bulletin boards and there were still scrawlings that could be read on the chalkboards. I filmed and took photos at this location. **Incidentally, we TRIED to get into the old Pope Funeral Home on Plymouth road but it was sealed up quite tight.
