Dallas proposes new drain

The city of Dallas is proposing to augment its existing Mill Creek and Peaks Branch drainage tunnels with a new project, which apparently will be deep-bored through the rock under Near East Dallas. Full Channel 8 article here: Linky (Bonus feature: the correct linky! What a concept!)

Here's a map -- if it doesn't show up, go to the article link.

The repeated flooding in these areas is caused by two old creeks, Mill Creek and Peaks Branch, which were enclosed 50 to 80 years ago in underground drains. The pipes can no longer handle heavy runoff.

The city council believes the solution also lies below ground.

The council tentatively approved boring a tunnel similar to one 20 feet wide that was made by the Texas Department of Transportation in 1991 to train runoff from North Central Expressway.

The tunnel would start north of downtown, cross underneath Interstate 30, intersect with both creeks and drain into White Rock Creek.

(lol @ "train runoff" -- love that spelling chequer.)

The article goes on to note that the tunnel will cost about $150 million, split about 2/3 from the city and 1/3 from TxDOT.

Oh, that's on purpose... I'm trying to wean myself off of my addiction to making useful posts. I think my next post should be a "me too!" with lots of colors and smilies.

(fixed, thanks. )

Well as far as construction sites go, this would be pretty cool.

Further information, including a .pdf from the city with hopefully more details, available at dallasmetropolis.com.
