Any explorers in Japan?

I'm going to be in Japan from July 24 to August 19 and if there are any explorers, I'd really love to see some of the exploration sites. I'll be travelling all over, I'm not even sure yet exactly what cities I'll hit. I'll definitely hit Tokyo, Osaka, and I'll be climbing Mt. Fuji. It's gonna be so damn awesome

If it's important, I can speak Japanese at about a JLPT 3 level.

BTW, if anyone knows a way to sneak onto Gunkanjima, that would be _EPIC_

I believe they're arranging tours of Gunkanjima once they fix the place up a little (probably years off) but if you can speak a little Japanese and you asked around some of the locals you may be able to secure a boat ride over for perhaps a ¥5,000 bribe

Edit: that being said though there are plenty of other places to visit. You can take a tour of the aqua drainage system under Saitama (somewhere around there) which is north of Tokyo. Or the buildings that they filmed Battle Royale if you're careful of broken buildings and can hire a car to get there.

As far as the Amusement parks, be aware, Fukushima Greenland is probably gone, as is Gullivers Kingdom and Kappapia in Gunma. Also the mammoth Toyo Bowling centre has been demolished recently.
Koga Family Land in Shiga is still there, and worth a trip! You could try Nara Dreamland, I saw some recent photos, looks like the security guards may have left now.
I am pretty sure Gunkanjima has a walkway construction being built at the moment, which would mean builders are on the island. I did post about this a while back on these forums.

Absolutely. I haven't picked a region yet as I plan to telecommute. If accomodation is easy enough to arrange (wishful thinking here) then I'd like to do 6 months in Tokyo and 3-6 months in a more rural area.

Late '09 is realistic though if I like Paris enough that could slip by 6 months.

btw, here's a link about what remains of Gullivers:

Hirakata-shi explorer here, if anyone is up for a trip sometime, I'm in. All I've found around here are abandoned apartment buildings.

Hi everyone. I'm back in Japan this year, I've been there one year already before. Went to the Okutama Ropeway, which was easy to access to and very nice, and to Kouga Family Land (where me and myfriends had quitesome difficulties avoiding the golf park watchmen... had to walk through the forest to get there butthat was worth the trip!).
Well, I'd like to go and see some other places this time, I'm in Tokyo now, so if you have any hints or advices on what is still there, andwhat is worth the trip, please please! tell me
And by the way, where is that "battle royale" place ? And anybody knows the "kyoshi kurosawa's charisma" hotel ?
thanks !

It was not so windy that day.
Kouga is a bit too great, now I don't know if I can find some place as cool as that one, that's the only problem with Family Rand... :p

You should start a new post for your pictures in the photography forum. There are a ton of people who won't look in here who would enjoy those.

Anyone wishing to go on a tour of G-cans in Saitama should be warned that you need to book well in advance. I tried booking 3 weeks ahead of time but all the dates in my 2 weeks in Kanto were already fully booked and I missed out.
