|  | | | The now-abandoned Blue Ridge Hospital (BRH) was founded by the Commonwealth of Virginia in 1920, as a tuberculosis sanitarium. It was originally called the Blue Ridge Sanitarium, and was built on the site of the former Moore's Brook Sanatorium. It was operated by the state until 1978, when it was handed over to UVA. The school operated the site as the Blue Ridge Hospital until 1996, when it was closed down.
BRH is a pretty large complex. It has several huge buildings, many small buildings, a power plant, a sewage treatment plant, a chapel, and a dairy farm (all abandoned). The site is in rough shape: the Lynman Mansion in the center of the complex is collapsing, and many of the buildings have a danger of asbestos. Almost all of the buildings are boarded up, and UVA employees are frequently out there. Also, police and ROTC use the complex for urban training.
Sadly about 70 percent of this wonderful place has been demo'd in 2008. A big time scrapping company has gone through the grounds very throroughly. There is not even a chair left, nothing. It's like a UE skeleton.
The Lyman mansion has been reduced from an awesome 50 to 60 room house with a wrap around poorch, to a normal looking house.This was one of my favorites.It even had a secret underground tunnel out of the boiler room.It olny went for about 30 feet, then was caved in.It was very creepy.
The grounds are now watched by a live in caretaker.you can give him a ring from the front gate if you need to.I personally have not met him,trying not to.
Well sorry it's mostly gone now, but here are some pics of what it looked like yesterday.

Dairy barn.This barn was used by police to house cars confiscated from drug dealers. I found my neibhor's car there after he was busted for selling E. (notice the fresh paint on the roof)

I was there a couple years ago and there was no scrap work done at all, now it is all empty and destroyed. Such a shame to loose all that history.
At least the Chapel is still looking good. That was my favorite part.
