|  | | | Well guys, the time has finally come. The Rochester City Council decided last night to fill in the northern part of the Rochester Abandoned Subway.
The reasoning is that it takes about $1 million a year for repairs to Broad St. above the subway. I read that it also contributed to the cause of the South St. Parking garage collapse a year or two ago. So instead they're spending $15 million to fill it in.

As you can see from my other thread, I just happed to be there last weekend. The northern part which they are talking about was noticeably in worse condition than the rest of it. There were a few places where you can tell that they have to go in an reinforce the subway's ceiling each year.
The northern part would be from about W. Main St up to Jay St. From the articles, work is planned to begin some time between September and next spring. I just did a quick look at it on Google Maps, and this is essentially cutting the Rochester Subway in half. It's going from about 1.25 miles long to about 0.5.
If you enjoy the subway, or have never been there, better hit up the full length of it while you can. It's sad to know this is going to be happening. I've been dreading this day.

My understanding of this was that the board was appointed a couple years ago and took their sweet time to come up with this final decision. I think this is the final answer. Especially when they're approved for 95% of the $15 million of it to be paid for by the state and the federal governments (maybe county too?).
That means the city only needs to pay about $750,000. They're paying more than $1 mil a year to fix it. Why wouldn't they? And they can always unfill it if they want to use it again.
Don't take me the wrong way. I do hope this is one of those things that never happen and they finally forget about it. But in the back of my mind I know it'll be filled one of these days...
At least it's only half the tunnel.

Yah I was kind of skeptical on that one myself. Especially since they're filling the other end, not where the garage is. If it was an issue, they'd be filling the beginning of it too.
Though if it's a concrete structure, concrete doesn't react well to shifting/settling and just an inch or two of movement could be very bad. I have a degree in architecture, but I sucked at it, so I could be wrong.

I'm pretty sure that at the time, they said that the garage was not even supposed to last as long as it has. it was supposed to be rebuilt years ago.

SUNY Alfred. They have a surprisingly good program. Good mix between design and technology/application. I lost the passion for it and switched to IT after getting my bachelors.
