Undeveloped Subdivision

I live out in the suburbs and around I'm surround by blocks and blocks of suburbia. From the highway I noticed a large satellite dish. I decided I'd go check it out. I did some quick research about this location.

I found out that this area isn't developed and instead is used by the county and village. It's the size of what would be about 6 suburban blocks. I've seen road names in the area on tax maps that don't really exist and are just trees. Some of the other roads do exist but they're barren.

This was going to be a simple solo afternoon UE for me. It combined four things I enjoy doing: Bicycling, hiking, seeing abandoned/industrial stuff, taking pictures of that stuff. I decided to bike in because it's close enough to and then I don't have to worry about my car drawing any unnecessary attention for parking on the street.

Once there I stashed my bike because the terrain would only slow me down. Now I'm hiking around on trails looking for buildings I saw on google/live maps.

On the first trail I was I found an area, to stop, check out my surroundings, check out my map. I made a map because there were 17 structures to explore and want to see only them, not some people who live near by this site.

#1 ***SHIT! At the time of taking the first picture, I realized I forgot my tripod at home. After all this, biking out my camera equipment and sneaking into this place I forgot one of the most important things for me. Well I wasn't going back, so I started using a stick I found as a make-shift monopod. The image was some kind of concrete marker. NY representin'

#2 This is the first structure I came up to. Locked door, steel plated windows. Damn.

#3 Big water tower.

#4 Next building I found. This one had a valve coming out of it.

#5 Wow, another building. There are lots of these scattered around. This one had some roof damage.

#6 And another one. Most of these types of buildings were securely locked up with windows covered up with steel.

#7 Some of the elecctrical wiring hooked up to these. By the condition of the building and the wiring hooked up to them, they don't look too functional.

#8 Most of these small buildings also had these pits covered with steel as well. I managed to open one up. It was just a 4' x 4' x 4' box with a 3 run ladder and some kind of outlet from the building that ran into it.

#9 Found one of the regular small buildings, this time with a different type of building. This different type had a sun roof and vents my camera could peer into. I didn't take a pic, but I got video. I saw the inside, it's nothing special. Just a pipe coming out the ground with a valve on it.

#10 An abandoned dock with a chimney. (sorry horrible far-away pic)

#11 Nice view.

#12 Last one, I promise. There were 7 of these things.

#13 Here is the dish I saw from the highway.

#14 To get a better sense of scale, look at the rungs on the ladder.

#15 The accompanying tower.

#16 While stopping and taking pics, I had some raspberries. They were growing everywhere. When taking this pic, I had my camera propped up on a log. After the pic, I realized I got some kind of orange goop on my hand that was on the log. It would not come off with water either. Even a stick wouldn't scrape it off. Had to vigorously use my fingernail for a little while to get this crap off. I don't know if I crushed a slug or what. Didn't get a pic because I couldn't hold the damn camera with out gooping it up. Wasted 15 minutes due to goop problems.

#17 I wonder if the combination to this lock is the same as my luggage.

#18 Backside of the dish

#19 The dish's control room.

#20 Are you frigging serious? I forgot my tripod, but then I found one. Well a quadpod. It looks like it was used for surveying or something. It was made of steel and very heavy. I didn't used it because I wouldn't want to lug it around.

#21 I ran into another naturific area.

#22 This was near some million dollar home. Still on my UE site, but this was at their property line. I don't know if I should be very careful or laugh.

#23 Fire hydrants.

#24 This was out in the woods away from a trail. It was definitely a "hey I found a drain, oh wait, never mind.." moment.

#25 Similar pipe thing as I was seeing in the buildings. I was trying to take some nice pics of this, then some neighbor with a view of the site was taking out his garbarge.
He saw me and gave me a death stare. He knew I didn't belong there. I began cooly walking away not looking back. He kind of sketched me out so I was going to leave the 6 main buildings I didn't get to yet alone. These ones were much bigger with garages. I also decided to abandon checking out some other shacks even closer to this guy's property.

#26 Walking away, I decided to grab one last pic.

I then rode back home. I also took a long my new 35mm film camera. I took more artsy pics with it. We'll see how they come out. If anything is worth it, I'll post them here. All in all it was a fun little local trip to kill time. Though I do want to go back again to finish what I was working on. The next time I should be able to navigate though this location quicker. I spent like 3 hours there and next time should be much quicker.

the little buildings are pump stations.
the antenna tower next to the dish is for the county/state EMS-Fire radio network.

the dish looks like an old school cable receiver... we have one way out on a road here. Haven't been used in almost 20 years.

Thank you, that makes sense. This is a fresh water area (not storm/sewer) so pump stations make a lot of sense here.

For the dish, that also makes a lot of sense. There was a sign at the dish saying that in case of emergence call xxx-xxx-xxxx.

I'm hoping my next trip back to this place will be more interesting.

I love it, the shots are great.
What kinda camera did you use for those? a Point 'n Shoot?

I have some of those towers near me but no dishes.... weird small white buildings with barbed and razor wire and nobody ever comes in or out...

I think mine may be cell phone tower or relays though.

[will attach image when i take it xD]

Thanks, but overall this site isn't anything super crazy, more of a time killer on a nice sunny day. I posted it because it was kind of unique for what it is, undeveloped land in prime location surrounded by miles of 'burbs and it's the only spot that doesn't have houses on it.

Though I only saw the small buildings up close/inside, I would still like to go back and see the larger ones.

Found out since starting this thread that I have developed poison ivy. Probably down by the abandoned dock. I was doing some off-roading there. Sucks, it itches.

The posted pictures were from a POS point and shoot. The shots on film came out pretty well, but nothing worth posting. Most were of the same angles, just better depth of field. Though the raspberry shot looked a lot better

EDIT: Some of these pics might disappear. I'm massively re-arranging my Flickr account. If you're trying to find any of these pics, you might find them here: http://www.flickr....otos/23362209@N06/

That NY Marker is an old railroad milepost marker.
