| | | Got back to donkey kong yesterday. Please forgive the pictures, it's impossible to keep water off the lens in there, and the top of the shaft is so thick in fog & humidity half of the flash shots are useless upon later review. My friends and I decided to hold a campfire/cookout down on the secluded beach not too far from the drain, so me & two friends decided that it'd be worth it to have a go at it. Change of clothes for each, towels, drain bag, ladder bag, and we were ready to go. Clothes were left in the bushes outside, as it's now october, which means cool air, with cold wind, especially alongside lake michigan. In we entered. Looking up at the first step.
The climb was quite a bit easier this time, and the water seemed much warmer than the last time around. After about 20 seconds, it less resembled the watery-hell that I have described to you all here, and more of a nightmarish water park. What fun. Water temperate must have been low 70's-high 60's, but the air temperature was about 80 and humid as all hell. Well, we made it to the top in good time, about 10 minutes. Once there, I quickly climbed to the top of the chamber and attached my homemade rope ladder to the fourth rung and climbed down. Me attaching the ladder near the top of the shaft.
I first attempted to work my way into the next shaft, but was unable to. One of my friends decided to give it a try, and we found that by holding the bottom of the ladder out as far as we could, he could make his way into the section that fed the dropshaft. Stretching to get into the next section.
Once he got in, it was easy to pull us other two in with him, and with nothing to tie the ladder to in our section, simply had to place it in the flow and hope that it didn't get washed back into the shaft. Up we traveled about 600-700 yards, before making a turn and coming to a junction room. It was small, and the drains that fed it were even smaller, so we decided to call it. We figured that they led to suburban shrinkers, but we wanted to conquer the transfer, and we did. It was dark out already, and there were 12 other people down the beach waiting for us to come back. We turned back to head down. The junction room
The walk back to the ladder was brisk & silent, with worry that the rope may have washed downward. We had found earlier that the tiniest sound upstream echoed hundreds of times in the dropshaft, and boomed back to us hundreds of yards back up the drain, so we decided to remain quiet. When we returned, we were glad to see that everything was still where we left it. Ladder where we left it, looking toward the shaft.
Looking down from the 6' section, with ladder bag where we left it.
Getting back into the shaft was quite easier than getting in, as all we had to do was swing out, and grab the metal ladder on the wall. My friend taking the swing
My turn next.
After that, we attempted to open the manhole. It was a solid hunk, and was not going anywhere. Whether it was rust, or exhaustion, we don't know, but we couldn't budge it. Trying to lift the lid
So instead we climbed down, which took about 5 minutes. On the way, we successfully each counted 10 steps, which seem only like 5 or 6 this trip, verses the feeling of climbing 20 or 30 on the last trip. Out into the cold october wind we came! The early cusp of the November Witch stings the wet body hard!
We quickly changed, and headed back to the warmth of the fire a few hundred yards south. There, we enjoyed the company of friends, and later a good night of drinking. Must have been, I still feel it today.
