Hey wuz up I have been posting on the Southern part of uer for quite some time and I have a question for you guys in the east. I am extremely interested in Kirkbride Buildings and I have heard that East State Hospital in Meridian Mississippi was abandoned, I would love to take some great pictures of this place but am lacking serious info on the place, I have researched the internet thoroughly and I am getting mixed info on the place, some sites say it was tore down some say it is still there but abandoned. If anybody could provide a little insight on this building it would be greatly appreciated.

Eastern State Hospital is still in use despite what you may have heard.

As far as the Kirkbride......

It's a bit of an interesting story. The current main building is still the main original central part of the Kirkbride. The original wings of that building are no longer existent, but in the 1950's the facade of the "historic" main central admin part of the building was removed and it was renovated to look more modern. Sort of what they did with Trenton Psychiatric in New Jersey. Also, with the current state of the building, the first floor actually used to be the basement of the main building but when renovations happened somehow the basement became the first floor.

So, the current Meridian "Kirkbride" (compared to the original) is wingless and the "backbone" and some of the guts of the current main building is part original Kirkbride Admin but unfortunately it bears no resemblance to the beautiful original building because an architectural team in the 1950's convinced them to make things more modern and give it an ugly utilitarian look that many buildings out of the 50's and 60's have.

So I don't know if you'd really want to consider it a Kirkbride, it's wings were clipped and the outside and inside portion of the remaining admin part of the building were substantially changed and only use portions of the original support structure.

Hope that helped.
