New shoot today ---- Gary, IN

Hellooo,

So this is actually my first post on here I believe. I have been on this site for a long time, but didn't really visit too much **ducks to avoid flying objects**.

Anyways, I was shooting at my favorite church in Gary and in walked these 3 guys. I was on a balcony above them shooting down and one turned around and looked up and nearly shit his pants. It was pretty funny, them obviously not expecting to see anyone. We ended up talking and then joined forces and went exploring together.

Living so close to Gary (only about 15 minutes away in Crown Point, IN), you'd think that I would have explored every crack and crevasse of the decaying city--well that's not the case. These 3 kids I met were bound and determined to scour every inch of Gary in one day. It was pretty sweet. We ended up going to the abandoned apartment complex that was only about 4 blocks down from there. I had never even known that it was so close! Amazing place. So many cool things to see.

Well anyways, here are some photos from the journey. Some are from the church (Gary Methodist) and some are from the apartment (forgive me for not knowing the name). If you'd like to see more, visit my myspace page at the following: www.myspace.com/mattbigelow

Enjoy!

nice set. i love gary... i've only been there twice, but it seems like there's always something else to explore. even with a ton of research, a list of sites and addresses, we still manage to stumble across new places.

can't wait to get back. sadly it's a bit of a drive from southern indiana.

No worries!

1. Yes, I use Canon Photo Utilities (or whatever its called). I rarely use photoshop, only to resize or maybe add a vignette or something. In the Canon Utilities I usually adjust contrast levels a bit and maybe a few other things to my liking. No fake stuff though for the most part.

2. I'm currently shooting with the Canon 30D and 28-135mm Ultrasonic (I have a few other lenses but I shoot with that guy for the exploration stuuuuufff).

Any other questions, feel free to ask! I don't mind answering!

Thanks again to everyone for the great responses. Much appreciated.

Just re-found the famous red chair today at the church and was amazed to find the big sliding door in the gym open because it had been closed for at least 2 years or so. oh and in the post office looks like it got hit by scrappers big time since i was last there a few years ago. but did run into another group from Canada i think scared the guy as he walked in. i was with a friend of mine and we saw the door open then just stay open and then 30 seconds later they guy came in and jumped a bit. Sorry about that if your on here.

Hello dont mind me.

Last time I went to City Methodist I scared the crap out of some girl in the basement.

CM is quite the hot spot, we ran into 3 other photographers while we were there. My friend had intended to take me to several abandonments in Gary, but, being a photographer, I spent almost 5 hours at the church. Oh well, more for next time.

It sure seems like it! I took my first trip to Gary this weekend and we ran into two other photographers in the Sanctuary. I was standing in the 2nd floor doorway behind the alter (choir loft?) when I saw a figure enter on the first floor. I didn't have my glasses on so I had no idea if he was a photographer or a thug. Luckily it was the former.

We also meant to check out a few more sites and Gary and then a hospital back in Chicago (ambitious day), but photography needs won out. We spent the whole day between CM and Palace theatre. Here are a few shots:

Anybody here ever venture up onto the upper section of the central sanctuary? I'm talking the platform thats 70' or so above the central area. There is a difficult to locate ladder that can get you up there.

I didn't have gloves with me so I was nervous about going up there.

It's this platform, though not that ladder. That ladder requires some cajones to get to as you have to tightrope a beam. There was a family of cats on that platform last time anyone I know went up there.

If you are making a day trip to Gary, check out Union Station while you are around as well

I've never had any troubles in Gary whatsoever. It's hard to be attacked by people when there aren't any people to do the attacking. Seriously, Gary is a ghost world. The post apocalyptic playground of your dreams.
