| | | southeast MI- a few questions. < on 6/29/2008 2:11 AM >
| | | okay. i'll soon be off on my annual trip to visit family in southeast michigan, fraiser-roseville area. i would like to explore downtown detroit. having never been in the actual city, i would like to know: - are there any areas to explore that are relatively 'safe' per say (meaning that i can go with a few people and probably not get shot...i'm a petite white female, but i'm bringing male friends/relatives) -the word is that i should go in the early morning hours- have you found this to be true? - has anyone been to any places in the actual roseville/fraiser area that are worth checking out? i do plan on driving around and looking for them, but i won't be there long, so the time limit kind of impedes progress. - what kind of drain system do they have in southeast michigan? anything worth exploring?
appreciate it if anyone has any info.

| | | Just a tip, don't get yourself killed by a crackhead. Your pretty far out of Detroit in Roseville but judging by your avatar I would urge you to be careful. [last edit 6/29/2008 4:59 AM by Wilk - edited 1 times]

Keep in mind that you & a couple male friends/relatives from the 'burbs are probably going to be no match whatsoever for the type of violent persons or people that plague Detroit. While I was in high school, a couple friends & I would drive from our affluent suburb down Woodward Avenue into Detroit on a Friday or Saturday night sometimes & just look at the insanity, much like people who on those drive-thru 'Wild African Safari' things, and it was pretty crazy.
Years later, I lived in downtown Detroit and really became familiar with the types of crimes, and criminals, and would see younger generations of people doing what I did. If you stick to Woodward Avenue & then a quick loop along Jefferson Ave from Cobo Hall to I-375 at night, you should be OK. Be careful about driving further E down Jefferson on a hot Friday or Saturday night in the Summer -- it's complete anarchy, as people (black people) are just cruising along & looking for a good time. For too many, tossing a 40 ounce malt liquor bottle out their window at the window of a car full of young white people who "don't belong there" can be part of the fun, and usually the police will avoid those areas because unless they show up in-force to make lots of traffic enforcement, etc. they'll just create more tension.
I don't mean to make Detroit sound like it's complete anarchy & you should stay far away -- when I lived there, I had a fantastic time just driving around exploring the city, fascinated by the ancient & modern blight & depravity. But I also had a big SUV with tinted windows (a potential carjacker wouldn't know if it was just me in the car, or me & 8 Aryan Brotherhood members...), a couple unusual antennas on the car, etc. so I knew my presence in some areas made them nervous, and I used that to my advantage at times). But it's not a place to treat lightly if you're going there to just drive around without really knowing the area. Crazy stuff happens there all the time, and it often didn't get reported by the media because it's common, and the media tends to try to portray Detroit in a positive, politically-correct light most of the time, or else they get labeled as being racist.
A good, relatively safe tour because you'd be staying on main streets would be to take Gratiot Ave into Detroit from Roseville, then head N on Woodward Avenue up a couple miles maybe to Main Street in Royal Oak to get some lunch/hang out, then take Woodward Ave S. back into downtown Detroit, turning right (westish) onto Jefferson Avenue under Cobo Hall, past Joe Louis Arena, and then make a right turn (northish) onto Rosa Parks, then a left turn onto Michigan Avenue, taking that W for a couple miles. You could cross the Ambassador Bridge into Windsor Ontario -- from across the Detroit River, Detroit actually looks nice. Get some dinner/hang out in Windsor, then take the tunnel back to Detroit, and either head N on Woodward to 696, or take 275 to Gratiot to get back to Roseville.
Statistically, my educated guess is that around 5 - 10AM are the quietest times in Detroit in regards to violent crimes. Have a full tank of gas, good maps/GPS, and if you for whatever reason turn off a main road & are on a road your Roseville area friends have never heard of, keep driving, & don't make eye-contact with any potential "Detroit tourist tax" collectors in cars next to you or hanging out on the streets.
If you get pulled over by the police while you're in a ghetto area, it's because they assume you young honkies are in the area to acquire narcotics.
Things I really miss from my days living in downtown Detroit: 1. Better Made brand extra hot potato chips (you'll pass their factory on Gratiot). 2. Greektown 3. Mexican Town (living in California, you'd assume it would be easy to find great Mexican food...) 4. The freighters 5. Being able to shoot out my living room window at an anchored jug I'd toss into the Detroit River (using a .22 from the middle of my living room, with my stereo on, never bothered the neighbors). 6. Having to always maintain a very high level of situational awareness when walking or driving around, while also projecting a strong "I'm minding my own business -- I won't phuck with you, you don't phuck with me!" attitude.

Had this happened to me once, by two white cops. They we're dead set on finding drugs on us. I guess they just couldn't wrap their head around why we we're in that neighborhood for any reason other than drugs

| | | Hoolie - you are a Michigander too? *hugs* Except I lived in the OTHER crap area - Grand Rapids. Okay, I really grew up in the country and had tons of stuff to explore that was rural and country - but crazy farmer stuff scares me more than gangs do any day. I agree with everything you said about Detroit... L
