My First attempt at HDR

Like the subject says.... Keep in mind I'm partially colour blind.

Oh, it was shot with a Canon 40D near Creemore Ontario, with a pol filter. HDR was done with CS3

I really like this one. The colors are very natural.

The hills in the background are also very nice.

It's how you should use HDR, just to get more details in the spots where there aren't that many in a 1 exposure - shot. Only thing I would fix are the purple lines created around the branches in the right top corner.

OK. I will be the asshole. These colours are not realistic in the least. Also, the picture is soft, possibly because there was movement during the picture taking. I see that someone mentioned the fringing in the top right, but there is fringing all over the place. The colour of the grass and the chimney is surreal and not in a good way. This could be an interesting subject, but the ridiculous colours take away from that.

I think you might have missed the part where he said he's partially colourblind.

As for the photo, the branches are distracting and the levels could be adjusted a bit to make things pop a bit more. Hit auto-levels and you'll see what I mean.
I'd also turn down the saturation to help make it a bit more realistic.

@ argonian, I’m a good boy, nah, when I read ‘My First attempt at HDR’ I immediately grabbed my sunglasses and thought I would have to postpone dinner, but this isn’t that ‘first attempt’ you usually get to see.

I may have been too tough with my tough love, but at least that got a conversation going in this thread.

Micro, I focused on the partially aspect. If you have problems seeing certain colours the answer may be black and white photography.

The branches bothered me too. I just didn't want to be an overwhelming asshole. Again, I think this is an interesting subject and the branches detract from it. Those branches in the top left, for example, are very easily removed and just removing those would be an improvement.

Keep on taking pictures. The insults may sting, but they will help.

OMG it was his first attempt and it did not look like a meth addict finger painted it in rehab. I like and yes there are a few issues that he can work on but holy hell just give the dude a break.

Hey, did you not notice this is the critique forum? How are you helping by saying "there are a few issues that he can work on" and not being specific? Do you really think your post serves any function? Oh, I suppose it shows you are better then me because you are nice. Kudos on that.

I agree that the branches on the left are distracting, some photoshop would be a nice addition; and the chimney itself needs to be desaturated. But it's as good as any other average HDR photo, which for your first attempt, is impressive.

Ya ok I guess I could have pointed out what you said in a nice way but since you did that I figured all I needed to say was don't be a bitch about it.

I like especially like HDR shots that are done like this. It brings attention to the detail aspect, not the obnoxious cartoon-ish color. You did way better than myself did when I first attempted it.

Thanks for the thoughts.... for the record i have difficulties with Red and Green colours. Which is probably why the chimney is so bright to you guys but looks cool to me. I laughed at the stick to black and white photography comment. I can still see colour, just not the same way as everyone else.

Anyways, when I get a chance in the next couple days I'll try to redo it with the comments you guys gave and see what comes of it.

Thanks!

I laughed when I read this because I personally loved this picture for all the reasons everyone else seemed to dislike... oh well, different strokes and all that...

I’m quite positive that you’ve slept with someone uglier than me, and I’m sure I’ve slept with someone hotter than you. So let’s just call it a draw.

Definitely really good for a first attempt! I agree about the trees cluttering the pic. Although they could be taken out in Photoshop. The purple borders are worth pointing out, but that is serious nitpicking that probably wouldn't happen if we didn't know this was an HDR. How many exposures are in this shot? Did you paint the layer masks by hand, or do something more automated?
