Nike Site Summit.

This symbol of the Cold War is the best preserved Nike site in Alaska, and quite possibly one of the last intact sites in the United States. Opened in 1959, Site Summit helped Anchorage sleep a little better at night for 20 years until the base was decommissioned. It was a great honor to explore.

Yeah, very cool. The Alaskan sites had their own unique design to them, due to the extreme Winter weather. While it's far from being the best-preserved Nike site, it's about the only Alaska site that's mostly intact, and overall, it's in pretty good shape compared to most other Nike sites, partially because it stayed operational until 1979, whereas all others (except some Florida sites) were shut down by 1974 at the latest.

Went back earlier today to finish up the IFC and get some more shots underneath the launch bunkers. I'll put some more pics up soon.

There are a decent amount of Nike sites still intact here in MA. Not nearly as exciting as that one though...

Aren't all the ones in Fairbanks either still on active military land, or privately owned by shotgun wielding backwoods types?

Oh man!! thats so cool!! At the nike that I visited the place is relatively complete but the buildings are not nearly as well preserved as your site!! Most launchers are flooded with water.. I guess the Alaskan sites had special drains put in to keep them from flooding rather than having the water pumped out.

Very cool! I had always wanted to check it out when I lived there but never was able to. This site has links to some aerial photos I took several years ago.

Site Bay out at Goose Bay is wide open but half destoyed, it gets used for redneck target shooting (guilty) and paintball a lot. The tunnels under the launch bunkers are kind of sealed but still squeezable, somehow there's an old car down there. You can kind of get into the "tunnels" under the IFC foundation at site point, but they're really just asbestos-filled crawlspaces. The bunkers out there are all part of the disk golf course, and one is a public ski lodge thing.

In Fairbanks, Site Love is reportedly bulldozed (we got stuck trying to reach it in the winter with no 4wd), Site Tare's launchers are Army Corps of Engineers storage and the IFC looks gone on aerials. Site Jig is used for gravel pit dynamite storage. Site Peter looks to still have some buildings but is used for training occasionally.

Site Mike (Pacman's Revenge) still has the radar towers and the launch bunkers, but the bunker roofs are missing and the tunnels have been welded shut: http://freak.minimanga.com/pacman/
You can drive right up to it, there is (or was) a tiny, easily-missed sign that says something about calling the base beforehand. We actually drove right up to site Peter which was crawling with trucks and guys with guns, one dude gave us this little "one-two-three-get the fuck out" hand sign and we left without further incident.

Turn off the internet and go play outside.
