| | | I've been to one of the entrances of the Winston Tunnel a couple of times. It took a couple days of walking in the woods to find it initially, but seemed pretty obvious once I knew where it was. The tunnel is on an abandoned railroad line, and one of the most fascinating aspects of the tunnel is that the railroad bed is still clear of trees and the railroad ties are still in-situ. So once you figure out where the train tracks were, it's easy to follow them all the way to the tunnel entrance. Up until about a year ago, there were the ruined shells of some outbuildings right beside the tunnel entrance which originally housed tunnel watchmen and the engine that powered fans to circulate air through the tunnel. Sadly, on my last visit, it appears that they have been torn down (which is strange since they are way the fuck out in the middle of nowhere in the woods). The front tunnel entrance has a giant DNR gate on it. The first time I went there, I hand dug underneath the bars (on a cold and wet day) a hole big enough to crawl under the gate and voyage inside. Disappointingly, the tunnel was caved in a few hundred feet inside. I have never put forth enough effort to find the other tunnel entrance. It's supposedly on some private property and difficult to reach without being seen. It's also supposedly not worth the trouble, since it's pretty collapsed and not nearly as photogenic as the front entrance. Here's some pictures:

Really REALLY not fun (note the ice cold mud puddle that formed at the bottom of the hole I dug):

| | | What "area" are you in, Shotgun-Mario? The Winston Tunnel itself might not be the coolest thing ever, but there are plenty of other neat things to see and explore in the general area that the Winston Tunnel is in. That's the area where I currently live.
