record find

hey guys, its been a little while since i posted my own pics on the forum. me and my friend revisited a location we found last winter. the place is home to thousands of gramophone records. unfortunately a lot of the location caved in on itself. with this said, i tried to explore around, however a lot of my pics turned out similiar.

also, me being the genius i am (sarcasm) i accidently had the camera on manual focus for a while, when i thought i was on automatic. as a result, some of these turned out fuzzy. the pics i posted are some of the more "salvagable" ones. i might have gone a bit bonkers on the post processing, however i figured i would try something new out.

all were shot with a borrowed sony h5 "prosumer" camera

heres the pics!

why don't you just learn to shoot manual all the time?
especially if you're posting in the critique section.

the camera was on manual mode, however i usually shot on auto focus with this camera since i only had it for the weekend. i had control of the shutter speed, f stop, iso, etc but i wanted to keep the focus on auto since i was still fiddling around with the other settings.

this place was really odd since the books shown were actually a bunch of encyclopedias. someone had a thing for music and encyclopedias

some of the records we found were...

-harry james
-gene krupa
-kay kaser
-frank sinatra

i did some research and all came out in the early to mid 40s. pretty amazing that theyre still there.

one thing i found when i look back at the pics is some fill light would have been nice in the pic of the sofa near the lower left hand side of the piano. maybe a reflector or diffused flash would have helped?

Vinyl was built to last, unlike CDs. I have records by all those musicians. None of those names are too rare, but all good stuff. That collection would've been worth a small fortune if it were in decent shape.

yeah im sure there are some pretty valuable (or once valuable) things there. literally there were piles and piles of records. the books in the first pic i didnt look at, i wonder what they are... kinda makes me want to go back. unfortunately the place has really gone.

thanks for the compliments and criqiques guys! anything regarding composition, lighting, etc feel free to let me know.

no time for a critique right now, but are you aware these records could be worth some serious money? If they are not melted or deformed, they would just need to be cleaned to restore to great condition. Not that I am encouraging that you steal them, but you might want to look into it.

I really really doubt you'd find anything that a record needle could even detect. They all look way too damaged. Maybe if there are a few that have been kept in an area where they didn't get too much water on them it would be possible, but you can immediately throw out all the ones on top, and don't even think about preserving the record sleeves.

being a music buff and in the music industry, seeing this makes me cringe.

i can't believe somebody would just leave these to get destroyed like this. such a shame.

one hell of a find for you though!

some of the records that are sandwiched between papers and stuff are actually in decent shape. i played them on a turntable at the appripriate speed for a gramophone and the tones were pretty good. warm like a record, not 'tinny' like a cd.

what would some of the mroe valuable artists be? not that im gonna go out and jack them, i just would like to know who was big at the time.

I would need to see a list. You could probably only get decent money from stuff like Gene Krupa and Frank Sinatra if they're in good condition. Otherwise, your best bet is to find good but obscure stuff.

Anything that plays at 78RPM, just forget about. 78s don't last and they sound like crap anyway.
