PICHER, Oklahoma

http://news.yahoo....farewell_to_a_town

Waiting in their cars or on broken sidewalks, the blue-jeaned crowd has turned out for a parade. But they could pass for mourners at a funeral.

They line up along the main drag in front of empty cafes and shops and rusted mining equipment fenced off with barbed wire. Passing time, some press hands and foreheads against windows of stores that went out of business so many years ago it's hard to remember what they sold.

Picher's mines closed around 1970

This is still a very active town or was two years ago. They are not kidding about the sink holes or the chat piles. There is one stop sign on main street before you get to the stop light. Watch out I hear the police there love to ticket people from out of town. So dont run through it.

According to what I saw on the news last night, a tornado killed at least 7 people and took out a large part of the residential area of Picher.

Picher damage extensive
On the outskirts of Picher, tin was bent around trees like wrappers on gum.
Trees were uprooted, and a line of utility poles bent toward the ground.

The National Weather Service sent out a tornado warning at 5:26 p.m., 13
minutes before the tornado hit Picher, said David Jankowski, a National
Weather Service meteorologist in Tulsa. Tornado sirens warned residents to
take shelter.

Several residents reported they did not get any warning, Brown and Ooten said.

Frank Geasland, Ottawa County's emergency manager, said evidence of storm
damage could be seen in a 15-mile path through the county

The entire city of Picher is still without power, Ooten said. Authorities from
Wagoner, Delaware, Washington and Mayes counties are assisting local officials
with search and rescue missions.

Picher is a former lead and zinc mining community that is now the center of the
Tar Creek Superfund site. The town's population has dwindled from a peak of
roughly 20,000 to about 800 people.

Sounds like that movie "Nothing But Trouble" with Chevy Chase.

I can't help but think the government's secret tornado weaponization project was a success, but that the targeting was off. Polluted area being bought out by the feds, several square miles, right in tornado alley... perfect black ops testing area.

Oh, excuse me, I need to talk to this very polite man in the black suit, who wants to give me an eye exam.

Picher was recently destroyed by a tornado. The town does have some interesting "chat piles" to explore and there's a lot of old equipment on or near them. There's a lot of people still in the town so you can't really do to much exploring in the old buildings (also, since you're in a big meth lab area most cops are going to assume you're scouting out a new area for your lab). The town more or less is also completely polluted so you need to be aware of that. Something funny (sorry I didn't click a photo because I didn't want to piss off the locals) there's 1 gas station in town and right above the soda fountain is a sign that says "foodstamps can't be used for soda fountain". There's a documentary about the town called The Creek Runs Red. If you're interested in checking out the town before the tornado then check out the video.

Picher Oklahoma after the Tornado

So, there's a thread already concerning Picher but I can't find it. Picher of course was destroyed by a tornado and when you drive in from the North you start to wonder if a tornado really ripped through the town. The water tower, city hall and everything north is untouched. Then you hit the south part of town and you see the devastation - it's seriously messed up. Of course none of the giant "chat" piles were blown away. I would've walked around and taken some better photos but there were some folks picking through the debris and I really didn't want to explain to them why I was taking photos of the pile that was once their house. Here's some of my photos.

Here's some of the old row houses in the north part of town that were completely untouched.

Awesome Picher pichers.

I don't know what's more devastating... the shattered homes in the foreground, or the man-made mountains of toxic chemicals in the background that will ensure that the homes are never rebuilt.

The thing that bugs me the most is that fact that these poor folks, stuck with worthless property in a dying town, finally catch a break with the financial relief that the superfund will provide, and before they can get their personal belongings out, a tornado comes through and trashes what little they have.

There's your kind and benevolent god for ya...

Some of the folks in the town would have never left. The true tradgedy is that some people who didn't have much to begin with lost everything and now no matter if they wanted to leave or not they're going to have to. The truly bad thing is that the town will be picked over by vultures then forgotten again and it will still be a toxic dump.
