Private forum membership numbers

Why do private boards max out at about 27 people? I could use a little more space for adding people on to my board.

Because when private boards were first created, someone made a private board and added everyone as a member, essentially creating a new forum section.

It's meant for small groups of friends, not to supplement the forum's public sections.

Well, what constitutes small to some is really small to someone else.

I can understand the need to prevent something like that, but I think a little more freedom for manuevering around is necessary. This forum is growing, and occassionally new members pop up that I'd like to add on to my board, but I can't without kicking out someone else who's already been on and posted there. I don't feel comfortable in doing that.

I just think that expansion is necessary to deal with the growth. Of late more Illinois explorers have showed up here. They have a right to be included in my private board about Illinois and what-not as I long as I verify that they are indeed cool and I establish a rapport with them, no? But I also have personal friends who'd like to see my stuff that aren't from Illinois who are on there. Do I kick out one for the other?

That's my point.

Hmm, I think it might be cool to up the number a bit, or make a feature that would allow you to subscribe to a forum, such as a film/Video board, like you can subscribe to LDB locations. It would be a "Topic Specific Forum" that could be viewed by those that choose to subscribe to it, there could be a link to a listing of Forums and a description of the topic discussed, where users could choose to subscribe to it. It would be a step between Private and Public forums.

It's an ambitious idea I suppose, but just mentioning it. I just feel, that if I were to start flooding the Photography section with film/Video threads, users would get confused and it would become a mess. But I guess it's fine the way it is, I mean why not let the music department, the drama department, and the athletic department all use the schools gym. There will never be problems! Ha, then schools started wising up and took the time and effort to set up seperate facilities, with wonderful results from all departments.
Give us A/V clubbies our own Forum, it only seems fair. I actually think that there should be a Multimedia section that encompasses both Film/Video, and Photography, as well as web design and other UE related techie things.

Please do not talk about one issue in a thread that's about another issue ... there was already a thread about the A/V forum.

So back to the issue at hand then.

What say you Alpha Wolf? I mean, if anyone were to add a hundred people onto a forum, it would be easy to spot and action would be taken. But I'm not going to do that, I wouldn't WANT the entire board on my board () and I think any violators would be easy to recognize and punish.

Maybe an idea would be that before any else could be added onto a board that has reached its current limit, the request to add an additional member would have to be sent to you first to verify before allowing another member onto any private board. Just an idea.

Speak to this lowly Beta Wolf an answer.

I am sorry, I just started talking about D-Lows issue, then since the two are closely related, brought up my issue. I really hate how this "Forum" environment cuts out natural conversation.

I also think the member limit is a little small. I remember when that board with everyone as a member was created (wasn't it Agent.Smith/Nismo) but I don't think that'd happen again, and if it did, you could simply delete the board Av. I think it's time to remove the limitation, now that the system is in place and running more or less smoothly.

The issue at hand isn't so much member limits ...

It seems to me that people are trying to use the private boards for something they are not designed for: to supplement the existing forum categories. Example: A/V forum or the Webdesign forum

So, a possible solution may be to allow users to create new forum sections, which other users could then "subscribe" to. It wouldn't be private, it'd be that only the users who want to be there, would be there.

It's an interesting idea. Though I think just removing the limits and allowing the private boards to be used as they were never intended to might be easier from a programming standpoint, plus the user won't have to learn a new set of controls. That's what I'd be thinking, if I were you, Av.

If the member limits were removed, I'd probably create my own invite-only board. As it is, I'd want to invite maybe 35 people, but I don't have enough slots to add them all. I wouldn't create a "subscription-only" forum, because I don't want everyone to have access to it.

I agree one-hundred percent.

I should be able to choose who I want on my board and personally invite them on. As it stands now, my ideal size would be 30-32 people. Does that kill the board by adding a few people on? No.

I mean, how many private boards are there? It's not like there's a hundred diffrent private boards sucking the life from the main board.

I could see if someone was creating a private forum that expressedly was branching off a main forum category ( a private "Photography" forum for example) that it would have to be removed, but my board is for my private matters that I only want to share with my closest people. And that's what these boards are for.
