Previously while exploring and taking pictures I would always use a Sony point and shoot camera. I've taken some nice shots with it, but you can only do so much with a point and shoot, so I recently picked up a DSLR. I still have a lot to learn, and would appreciate some input.

This is my first post asking for photo critiques, so here are 15 pics I chose from 11 different locations (posted in no particular order), and then 1 non-UE photo for the hell of it. I chose pics that I felt were good for criticism. All these pics were shot with the Canon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 kit lens, and with a .45x macro attachment on the ultra wide shots. A few are somewhat grainy because I used a higher ISO to compensate for the shitty lens. I shoot mostly without a tripod, and any post editing is noted.

1.

2. The focus is a little off..

3. Shot using tripod

4. Shot with tripod, 2 exposure HDR

5.

6. Changed exposure and contrast in post

7. Shot with tripod, 2 exposure HDR

8. Shot with tripod, no post. Forgot to lower the ISO so its grainy as shit...

9. Shot with tripod.

10. Single exposure HDR

15. Color selection B&W

i love 4, 7, and 14. The hallway in 4 is what I love walking into for the first time. I wonder what happened that it is under environmental investigation...weird. Very nice shots though, probably a lot better than I could ever do.

I'll start with what I like.

2 isn't bad. If you experiment with tilt-shift focus, you can make it a sharper picture by focusing maybe on only one label. I do like 5 and 6. Simple composition but simple subject, and good photos for a series. 10 is a very striking image. 11 is cool. And I think 16 is a very good picture.

Now the constructive criticism. 3 is a little stagnant. In 7 you really needed a longer exposure. In 8 you really really needed a longer exposure. In 9 I think the only way to save it would have been another HDR. I can't even see what is in the foreground. I don't understand 13.

I agree, its because there was a spotlight in the area, and the boards were meant to reflect light. I never went to post with it to fix it. And sub999, I dont know what environmental hazards they spoke of, because I found nothing out of the ordinary on the other side of that fence.

Thanks for all this input. What I liked about 9 is all that you can see is the smiley face. I should have fooled around with other ways to go about capturing that probably.

perhaps? If candy corn is a pseudonym for the Caritas Norfolk facility then yes

I really enjoy the angle on number two. 10, 13 and 14 also caught my eye.

I know you guys are mocking me for yelling at you for playing with those fire extinguishers. I could really give two shits. I'm no ethics nazi, I just hate dumbass high schoolers who think an abandoned hospital is a fun place to smoke pot and fuck shit up. You guys are fucking idiots and you pissed me off.

some of these compositions are sort of awkward, there's too much out of focus "stuff" in the foreground that i find very distracting. you're exposures look fine but i'd invest in a nice tripod (if you don't own one already) and take your time and not rush your pictures.

first of all we wern't smoking weed.. we asked if you guys smoked.. or if you had weed... and even if we were smoking.. why are you so concerned about it?
second of all spraying dry ice isn't fucking shit up.. we wern't smashing things.. my friend simply sprayed a fire extinguisher!
third none of us are in high school...

oh and your planning on going to Opex? then maybe you shouldn't attack the planners.. I'm assuming you read all the details for it if your rsvp'd.. so going on that.. Obviously we think abandoned hospitals are just a fun place to fuck up.. cuz that makes soo much sense!

I was not mocking you.. I was simply trying to make sure you got out bad.. I'm sorry you think we just smash and fuck shit up.. but we don't do that at all.. I know your in the boston area and I would be more then willing to take you out exploring sometime.. your friend said you dont have many people to go with

one more thing.. parking in the parking lot of the building your exploring.. esp one patrolled by cops.. is prob not the smartest idea...

see you at Opex!

Best to explore alone, anyway. I lost count how many FMs in good standing left UER, or stop posting after attending these big, bad get togethers. The group mentality is for the weak and a few those who wish to control.
Always follow your own best judgment and use your common sense.

The images need work, but the good things is all you took were images, harm nothing, so if others are as thoughtful, you can go back and reshoot till your content with the results.

To have respect for your subject shows thoughtfulness and character. You already have a skill some will never master, and one of the most important ones I believe.
Try some people and/0r animal shooting too, it's more challenging and fun.

I didn't post that.. so it has nothing to do with me... so don't stick that on me...

and as for uer loosing good forum members I stopped posting as soon as I joined because of the attitude I noticed from many of the forum members..I have a lot I could contribute to the forum.. not that it matters or has anything to do with this..

exploring alone is a great idea.. esp when you fall through a floor collapse.. or get yourself into a dangerous situation..

the mass-ue Opex has nothing to do with control.. and we are trying to focus it around individuals rather then groups... everyone is welcome to help in planning and in giving input.. infact thats what we want in planning this event... I don't know whats up with people and UER and assuming shit that they obv know nothing about.. but I notice thats a trend around here...

the fact of the matter is there are no rules to exploring.. so get over it.. as much as I wish locations didn't get fucked up! the fact of the matter is it's going to happen.. no point in crying about it!

and to get back on topic and not turn this into some stupid flame war..

your pictures are good for what they are.. tripods help but I find sometimes I get more caught up in exploring rather then taking pictures..and setting up my tripod and camera just gets annoying when i wanna run around and just snap shots... taking your time is key.. shoot and shoot again untill you get something you like.. mess around with diff stuff on your camera.. everything takes practice.. your headed in a good direction I think.. the pictures remind me more of old school ue pictures mixed with more of the newer artsy ue pictures.. it's a nice mix of both

Then read the whole of what your responding too; you stuck it on yourself!
No one likes big sisters making vague threats, and trying to barter with worthless commodities.
Double talk is still 2x talk no matter how many words you try to hide it with. More than one numbskull in a group of intoxicated experienced "explorers" has plunged to their death.

Ever try putting a fire out with an empty extinguisher? Why not just make as much noise as possible? Small wonder cops show up. Yeah, company like that makes sploring so much safer...

The fact that Willskith posted in this forum (that's asking for it), leaves only footprints, and has the balls to voice what he believes rather than to mob mentality makes him an asset to UER, I feel.
Nothing wrong with caring about a site enough not to fuck with it. That's the way most here feel. It gives others the chance to share that site, un-fucked up.
