|  | | | Hello everyone, this is my first substantive post. I hope that I don't pull some kind of noob move and violate some kind of protocol via this post but this place is worth taking the risk.
I was 12 years old when I watched a show on a local PBS affiliate. It was about a military owned ammunition propellant plant (nitro-cellulose) and how it was the largest of its kind. It was built during the second world war to in an effort to curb the ever increasing demand for ammunition propellant. Covering some 7000 acres and containing hundreds of strange little buildings I took mental note but that was about it.
Fast forward 15 years: reminnissing with my father about that very same tv program, 2 revelations Its almost totally abandoned and its relatively close to where I live. Holy crap I have to go there!
Got there. Greeted by a large sign reading something like: armed gaurds love to scatter the brains of anyone who even farts in the direction of this place, or something like that I can't accuratley recall. Aww f-bomb!
Without being able to stroll right in I snapped a few pictures from the service road instead. Thirty paranoia filled seconds elapsed as I took 4 pictures. My wife then informed me that the forementioned brain scatterers were hastily approaching in a truck. Aww doouble f-bomb!! That Audi had never seen such brutality as I peeled back onto the highway, tail tucked, defeated.
I then decided to go with the ligit route. I spent hour after hour contacting people with the Dept. Of Defense trying to find out who was in charge of the place. I finally got a call from this guy. Mind you I never gave anyone my phone number. He asked what my business with this location was. I told him that I'm a photographer and I wanted to document the vast expanses of this complex before they bulldoze it. He said, "in no way would I ever be granted permission inside let alone with a camera." Then he asked if I was nuts. I said, "No, I'm not nuts. Hypothetically speaking if I had taken some pictures from the service road could I have gotten into any trouble?" He told me if I wanted free room and board in Leavenworth Kansas I could simply tresspass on US military propery and take pretty pictures. Then told me to "forget about this location" and hung up.

The meaner these people are over the phone, the less likely they are to have any real security measures in place (other than a fence) with which to stop you from getting into it. You'll notice they seem to have failed miserably to stop a certain someone from getting inside. Mean language like "You'll go to jail if you do something stupid and gay like take pictures lol football" almost always means the person is A) Very unhappy with their job and wants to take it out on you, and is B ) Trying to deter you from visiting with psychological power because they have almost nothing in the way of physical power to stop you.

Funny you should mention about going the legit route. I tried it recently. I sent a letter to the state DPW the other day about possibly letting me shoot a certain place. When I woke up today there was a voice mail on my cell from someone in the department. They basically laughed at me, said no due to environmental concerns, and hung up.
Oh well, what they don't know won't hurt em.
