| | Elkmont Ghost Town < on 4/30/2008 12:48 PM >
| | | I realize there's already a listing for this in the Location DB, but since I'm not yet a full member, I can't add these photos there. So I thought I'd post them here instead, as this is a LARGE ghost town, with lots to explore. I have been there twice in the past year (this set features photos from both trips; hence the varying amounts of vegetation), and there are still a couple dozen houses I've not yet gone in. My favorite find was a house that looked like they just up and left overnight. There was very little furniture in it, but lots of random household stuff left, especially in the kitchen and basement. Seeing the design of some of the product cans was a major blast from the past; I'd guess the place was abandoned in the late 70s, as the packaging reminds me of my childhood. This set also contains a couple of what I'd call "artistic" shots -- a real rarity for me. http://www.flickr....@N03/tags/elkmont/ Enjoy! -newtn

I was last there in mid-late January of this year. Although there has been much talk of both tearing it down and restoring parts of it, there is no money for either, so they just sit, slowly being reclaimed by nature. Get thee there as soon as possible, though; like all ghost towns, nature & humans are taking their toll (although, admittedly, the vandalism here is surprisingly mild, considering how easy these are to reach, and how heavily visited is the park).

I once lived in a house that was built in the seventies and in severe need of appliance updates--the entire kitchen was avocado green. Fridge, oven, stovetop, cabinets, counters. And the downstairs apartment was black and red. Made me glad I missed the seventies.

Wow, if you've got a 3-hour drive each way...start early. There are a LOT of houses there. 50+, I believe. Of course, not all of them have much in the way of contents...but then I like just seeing the craftsmanship that went into the construction. So I guess it depends on what you're looking for. If you're looking for abandoned houses, this is your place. If you're looking for abandoned houses full of stuff...there are only a handful. The best map I've found online is here: http://tnhiker.smu...os/131547755-O.jpg

| | | Went yesterday. Def worth the trip. One of the hotel buildings is standing and alot of the homes are open to the world. Saw some park people but they seemed to look the other way. Drop everything and go. You won't be disapointed. Have fun out there.

Unfortunately, Elkmont is near the other end of the state, in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Still, if you're driving down, you could likely add it to your itinerary fairly easily. Ducktown...if I have my locations correct...is near the NC and GA borders. I'm not aware of any specific explorations to be made there, but it wouldn't surprise me, either. Last time I was through that area I noted that it is apparently the site of one or more old copper mines, so it likely has *something* to see. It's on my to-check-out list, for the next time I'm nearby, but not urgent.

| | | I love that place. I went there while I was on my honeymoon. There is so much to see! did you see any of the houses that were on top of the hill where the hotel used to be? I didn't see the house with all the stuff in it. I will look for it when I go back. Here are a few of my shots:
