Anchorage: Kincaid Park Car Dump

According to ADN, "The dump site at the southern end of Kincaid Park has long been closed, but illegal dumping still occurs. Stolen vehicles and even the cars of people who drove over the cliff trying to commit suicide rest decaying at the base of a 400-foot bluff. The site likely began after the 1964 earthquake when hundreds of destroyed cars were discarded in the area that is now both the park and Alaska Coastal Wildlife Refuge."

This was my first stop in a series of Anchorage explorations. My brother and some friends decided to tag along as well.

You gotta love stainless steel.

This gives you an idea of just how many cars are buried here.

Very nice. It's awesome to see car dumps that don't look like conventional scrap yards.

Concerns me to see stuff getting dumped right beside an open waterway. Nice to look at, obviously, given the age of some of those cars, but at the same time, environmentally, not the greatest.

Reminds me of the redneck shooting range in Fairbanks, out by the Flood Control dikes. That area is a jungle of burned-out cars, shot up appliances, and random trash.

Now that is cool. Thanks for sharing. I've seen similar stuff near Fairbanks as well as the lower 48, mostly in NV and CA deserts and mountains.

These pictures remind me of Easter Island, but with rusted out cars instead of stone heads.

Cool!!

Outrageous. I spied a 59 Impala in there and that 1st-gen Riviera, then you have newer Cavaliers and everything else tossed right into the melange of metal. Why are they buried partially, is that natural erosion or did "they" bulldoze dirt over them to try and cover the car-casses???

It looks like a little bit of both. I'm sure they buried most of the cars after the earthquake, and after 44 years slowly became uncovered by wind, rain, and snow.

I spied that '59 Impala too. I wonder what other classics are buried there.

There's a similar dump outside Carson City, NV (Dayton) and near Pollock Pines, CA. They were originally county dumps, but cars were thrown in there too. There's a few poking out of the ground in the NV one.

I've seen car dumps in the desert, but that Alaska one is the largest buried one I've seen.

There's a pretty sweet car dump just East of Sutton in the woods between the Glen Highway and the Matanuska river. I can't recall exactly where, but there's a little redneck store/bar on the river side of the road, then just upstream there's a whole row of cars of various ages parked in the woods, some with trees growing through them. There's also a private cable tramway across the river to someone's house, if that helps narrow it down.

Abandoned cars are super common all over the state. If you know where to look there's even old model T and model A Fords hiding way off in the bush where they were barged in or brought in on ice for mining camps. Those damn busses are everywhere too, they make cheap redneck cabins.

I keep telling people from the lower 48, that its almost amazing-- right when you think something is abandoned you realize it isn't, just snowed it. (I got burned by 3 sites in Fairbanks like that!!) "Oh! You mean you LIVE here, oooh."
Umm, yeaaaah. I'm heading south here probably next weekend to hit the biggun though... If anyone is up for it, PM me.

Alaskans have also never heard of "No Trespassing" signs, you're just expected to magically know when you're on private land. While you can sometimes tell, the difference between public and private roads/land/buildings isn't always recognizable, even to a local, until you're confronted by some angry redneck.

I've also seen the problem from the other end, it took a lot of vandalism and break-ins for some friends to FINALLY post their property. The place looked so overgrown and run down that kids were just wandering in and taking stuff.

I'm 90% sure this is the Matanuska car dump I mentioned. The buildings to the north are beautiful downtown Chikaloon (one general store, one redneck bar). The road leads down to the river bank, and the cars are in the woods near that arrow.

http://maps.google...=k&z=16&iwloc=addr
Or if UER mangles that url, just search for "61.774148, -148.488936" in Google.

I'm pretty sure it's public access to the river bank, and the store owner said we could camp there for free.

Cool, I'll have to remember that when going camping. Just out of curiosity, do you ever come up and stay during the summer months or does your current schedule not have room for that?
