China suggestions?

I'm going to be in China (mostly Beijing and northern China) from April 29-May 17. Any suggestions of good locations (abandoned or otherwise) you all would like to see? I'm going to be hitting up some of the more obvious places like the Forbidden City, the Emperor's Summer Palace, and Tiananmen Square, of course.

There is pretty well no such thing as urban exploration in China, but if someone were to start it, they'd find a ton of stuff.

In China, "nail houses" (dingzihu or 钉子户) are getting a huge amount of media attention. Basically, a nail house is a condemned building where the owners are fighting to keep it from being demolished. Here's a thread I did on it earlier.

If you find the right person and show them these Chinese characters, they'd probably be able to show you a ton of stuff. This will lead to a lot of residential stuff, probably some full neighbourhoods, and a few businesses and restaurants as well.

When I was in Beijing it seemed like half the city was under construction, so I guarantee there'll be lots to see.

Oh yeah, and if you like punk music, stop in at D22 in Wudaokou. If you see a short blond guy, tell him racetraitor sent you.

Hi,

BTW for the great wall: try to get as far out of the downtown city as possible to get to your access point. It's well worth it to avoid some of the crowd. We took a bus to one, it was only a few dollars for the bus ride.

Though you get to some point where it's not fully repaired:

Def hit up some of the cheap markets too. Silk Market I think one was called, there is a bunch though. It's a building with like 4 or 5 floors of little vendors. There is a section downtown near the university that has just electronics too. Just make sure your haggling skills are up, you can get stuff for 10% of the initial asking price sometimes.

No doubt with the Olympics and the Tibet situation.

It's also worth remembering that China is a huge place, so going up to the northern part of China would be like going from Texas to New Jersey, only with a less modern infrastructure. Not exactly a weekend getaway, although I do understand trains are extremely cheap if you have the time.
