Portsmouth Naval

I caught a newspaper article printed in today's paper that the Naval Prison is up for lease again. It's one of our coast's holy grails, and I don't think anyone here's done it yet. Unless there's an unsung leet master who's being modest about it.

My curiosity was piqued, so a Seabee friend and I headed to the coast today. She and I split up and she headed to the shipyard to do some poking around with her clearance and I headed to New Castle to do some recon from across the shipyard...

From the coastal side, security looks a bit lax, at least between the water and the building itself. But the water was swarming with coast guard ships, and I ran across a station in New Castle itself.

When she returned she let me know that from what she could tell, getting in from the shipyard side would be quite the feat but that with some business credentials one could get permission to tour some parts of the facility as a 'prospective renter'.

Anyone else taken a look recently and considered a shot at it? I wanted to spend some more time but it seemed like some people in town thought I looked a little suspicious with a camera snapping shots at the Naval Yard. We headed back to Portsmouth and grabbed a couple of brews and talked it over.

As a sign of hope, the paper article has a pretty vivid description of the interior and vandals and looters have had some success. So if the fools can do it..

they said it's been vandalized when they went to renovate in the 1990's, meaning it happened long before.

SO many locations are super sketchy after 9/11 that never were before. a nuclear power submarine station would be one of those places

There are a TON of buildings at PNS that are abandoned, and most are pretty sweet. I worked there 8 years ago, but didn't have the chance to explore the old prison. Closest I got to it was driving by it so I could check out the Trident class sub (USS Michigan) coming down the channel to dock for some event. (that was pretty cool anyway)

One building I did frequent a lot was the old sub manufacturing building, as it was directly between the shop I worked in and the sub I was working on, so it made a nice shortcut thru it. Unfortunately I didn't take any pictures. The building is where they used to assemble the old subs and launch them into the river. It hasn't been used in 20 or so years though, as Portsmouth is not a sub manufacturing base anymore, just a service/refurbishing station. The building is an open warehouse type building with a ceiling height of about 50', wooden brick paved flooring, a few side rooms/offices, a bunch of leftover machinery, and pigeon poo everywhere. Pretty interesting...

This building is between Bailey Ave and West street in the linked map, going North-South.

True, but being a nuclear sub base.. security is high, especially during refueling.. armed marines w/ shoot first, ask questions later orders.

Agreed... security is very high from baseside, and the Coast Guard means business seaside. The world we live in today is not very conducive to skulking around active military bases, unfortunately.

I have worked for the Navy in the past, and to be honest when I heard it was gutted my first intuition was that it could have been bored sailors. There are a lot of great people in our armed forces, but we also have a few degenerates. ;)

djspookman: that submarine construction building sounds awesome. If I can find someone with a current badge I may have to check it out as a "guest".

After the USS Cole attack (http://en.wikipedi...ki/USS_Cole_attack) the Navy is very wary of small rafts. Enough said.

If you want an idea about what the interior looks like, there was a shot of a jail cell in the book "Weird New England". I want to go to this site, and have thought about it a fair amount, but ultimately did not think the risks were acceptable.
