Gunkanjima- good news or bad news?

Gunkanjima island in Japan will be open to the public next year, there is a walkway being built around the whole thing for visitors to check it out.
Opinions?

Considering that they are going to preserve the island in its abandoned state as a tourist attraction it's not that bad. At least they're not demolishing anything and building hotels and swimming pools as they would probably do in America...

Neither good nor bad. Kind of annoying to those of us who like to see shit falling apart.

It would actually be more useful to the world in general if they "re-did" large chunks of it to show what it was like in it's prime. Done correctly, it would have much more relevant historical significance then it does now.

Or it would make some kick-ass lofts!

I'll make sure I'm there as soon as it opens. That might be the best way to decide.

wow!

i wish it was in a country other than japan, cuz i'd probably be more likely to go...

i think it's good, but i agree that they should reconstruct a few things to give it more historical significance and show us what it used to look like. i feel like this site could get run down with all the tourists venturing around there, especially since we know that there are many who don't like to always stay on the beaten paths...

hahaha!

i'm glad that i know how to make myself look like an idiot...fantastic!

what i meant by "run down" was that it would become more demolished by tourists, putting their footprints on a historical site, throwing their trash around and adding to the rubble. it's definitely not going to do anything to preserve the current devastation...

and yes, i have seen photos.

It didn't seem like a very stupid thing to say.

I would guess a lot of parts of the island would still be off-limits, particularly buildings that they figure couldn't support the weight of tourists.

I'm pretty sure that all buildings are off-limits and the tourists are only allowed to admire them from the outside. The Japanese won't risk injuring even a single visitor.

That's what it sounds like will happen! I'm honestly not sure they will get the tourism they are hoping for or think they will. From the pictures I've seen it looks like a raft of falling apart buildings...

Hm.. I don't know about that.

"Unfortunately we weren't able to spend as many daylight hours as we would have liked on the island. Thanks largely to the recent proliferation of cruise boats that circle the island, daylight access is limited, and we found ourselves literally running acrosss the island to record what pictures we could. However we were able to return that night."

Me thinks to make an intelligent comment on this tread you need at least two of the following:

o To live in Japan, speak a little Japanese, or to have at least visited Japan to know the feel of what standing on the dock in Nagasaki is like.
o To have been to Hajima, or at least seen it up close.
o To have a moderate idea about what, and where this fascinating place is (as opposed to it just being in `Japan`).

Anything else is just speculation. Sorry to sound like a twat, but I've got all three of the above, and have not an idea about what this means, the present state, and the possible impact. Remember - not everything you see on the internet is true.

For example, when Nagasaki-to releases the access map, we can start discussing what it means, and I'll be in-line waiting to get back...

See ya! Neko.

I'm probably one of the few white people left who doesn't have a boner for everything Japanese, but I've been to Nagasaki and seen the harbour. Not sure what Hajima is but it's a useful phrase in Korean.

Hey, you live in Seoul, so that explains that. The food there makes me freak with happiness just to start...

Hajima is the real name for Gunkanjima. But (hajima)... Ha ha.
