| | We all started somewhere.... < on 3/13/2008 10:14 PM >
| | | I started urban exploring four years ago as a Freshman in Highschool. Everyday me and a band of friends would walk around our 1971-built school looking for doors that the custodians had left unlocked. We found basements, an attic, large crawl-spaces, and many other rarely-seen places. We called ourselves the "Class of 1493". Today I went back to many of the locations that gave birth to my love for urban exploring. Hey, we all started somewhere... Pictures taken with my Nikon D70 with Nikon 18-55mm Lens. One
First off is the light-room above the auditorium... Two
Climb up a hatch in that room's ceiling and you are at the entrance to the catwalks above the stage... Three
The catwalk seems to go on and on forever... Four
A look to the left... Five
A look to the right... Six
Walk about 80 feet to the end of the catwalk and you get to a doorway... Proceed. Seven
This is a Radio Relay (I believe) Eight
Walk to the end of the room, duck under some air ducts, squeeze to the side of another air duct and you find another hatchway... Nine
Go through the hatch and BAM! You're above backstage. ****Now we proceed to one of the basements**** Ten
Controls the schools temperature. Eleven
HUGE Exhaust-fan turbine. The air comes in from the left and is sucked through a series of filters, then is re-circulated throughout the school.

| | | Pretty cool, I remember by the High School in my town (I went to another local High School) had a bomb shelter under the gym that hadn't been touched in 30 years. It had beds and other stuff, with sheets and old supplies in closets.

| | | I was a theater tech geek in my high school and those look similar to places in our theater. We had an overhead catwalk and a dressing room that was once a bomb shelter. We also had an abandoned dormitory and gym building that was used for storage of some of our props. They were awesome buildings. I kick myself for never bringing a camera inside, but this was almost 20 years ago. Buildings are long gone.

| | | That's pretty cool you guys had a fly system in high school! Those are rare to find in high schools, in large part because of the extreme danger... I've read about a private school an hour from my house installing a motorized fly system to deal with the liability... Cat walks are fun, but not nearly as fun as high tension steal grids... Nothing like walking on springs to make you feel like your above it all...

| | | My friends and i grew up in a town that had been a mining town for decades and then was over, almost overnight. All those buildings were left behind, railroad infrastructure, mining infrastructure just sitting there getting demolished one summer at a time when the town could whittle money out of the state or federal government to drop them... and that wasn't often. We played in these buildings all the time, each one capturing the imagination and gearing us into our own personal Mad Max fantasy... I was utterly astounded on that dark and stormy night in September 2003 to realize that there were other weirdos out there doing the same damn thing... Even now, here in 2008, I still find new and interesting places where I work, places that are unique cubbies and hiding places... honestly, sometimes this is more than a hobby, it's a new way of attacking our daily world.

Beautiful. Sometimes I think we all need to go back to locations we haven't been to in years, or even one you go in all the time. I always find something new, each and every time I explore.

So true There is always something new is an old place. A camera angle you missed. Something written on the backside of a door. A room you missed. Different lighting. Different people always change the place too.

| | | My high school spares were spent with friends sneaking into the schools basement (I was a drama club kid, so I knew the many ways to get down there.) looking through the various piles of junk in rooms and the like. We once removed sections of a wall making a hidden door to get into the next room. I used to sit in there and scour over records and the like from the 60's, set up the ancient projectors and watch the old educational films on the walls. We also spent a lot of time climbing the rafters in the auditorium. Walking through the disused balconies and upper levels. Makes me miss that building just a wee bit, then I remember that I fucking hated high school.

| | | Hehe I do this in my school all the time. I remember finding a room above the auditorium that was filled with a bunch of boxes of 'survival biscuits' from 1962. I had to take a few, it was one of the most interesting things I've ever found. Not too long ago I made my way up into the clock tower and got some nice shots. Carelessly unlocked doors are a beautiful thing =) Next mission is to find the schools bomb shelter.

| | | I started visiting abandoned houses when I was six or seven years old, and photographing them on purpose when I was eight. Since I was the one behind the camera, there's no pictures of me, but I took some of my friend. I tried to find a way to my old school's attic that was filled with all sorts of old stuff, but never found one. Same with the basement. [last edit 3/16/2008 4:54 PM by Tupsumato - edited 1 times]

| | | I've been going to where I wasn't allowed since I was a child. In fact, I was banned from extracurricular activities during my freshman year in high school because the administrators didn't want me wandering around.
