Underneath New York (Book)

I found this one in the public library last week. There's no shortage of books that cover New York City's underground, but what makes this one somewhat different is that it was written in the 1940s, probably making it the first book of its kind. It's written in that high-school-educational-film kind of way (in the good sense) and would probably be of interest to anyone interested in this sort of stuff regardless of what city they live in.

There's a limited preview of it on Google Books:

And a few other recent books that cover similar ground:

The Works: Anatomy of a City - Kate Ascher (2007) <--- buy this one now!
Water-Works: The Architecture and Engineering of the New York City Water Supply - Kevin Bone (2006)
New York Underground: The Anatomy of a City - Julia Solis (2004)
Waterworks: A Photographic Journey through New York's Hidden Water System - Stanley Greenberg (2003)
Invisible New York: The Hidden Infrastructure of the City - Stanley Greenberg (1998)

Water-Works: The Architecture and Engineering of the New York City Water Supply - Kevin Bone (2006)

Find this book, it's amazing--lots of old, fantastic photos and drawings of NY's water system.

The other books micro mentioned are really good too.

Find this book, [Bone; Water-Works - my comment] it's amazing--lots of old, fantastic photos and drawings of NY's water system.

The other books micro mentioned are really good too.

-I've only got the Greenberg one, but that one is a stunner - a series of 8"x10" B/W plates showing seldom-seen parts of the NY cityscape. Highly recommended - the photography is excellent, and the motives are stunning if you're into UE.
