One of those is a Sub, if it was a nuke I would not want to be anywhere near it!

i [finally] saw the movie 'national treasure' the other day, and the movie starts like this...them exploring a frozen ship buried under snow/ice. my first reaction was, "man how i'd love to explore that place." ships in general are interesting. make one abandoned and half frozen...i'm sold!

Those wusses don't even have any shots from inside the ships. Amateurs.

Funny, that was my thought - very disappointed at that. A shot on the bridge of one of the larger ones would have been ace.

Yeah, they aren't known for their sound environmental practices.

I don't see any sub in there, just ordinary ships. BTW, submarines would never be abandoned in this fashion, they would have been lined at the docks in a secured military harbor waiting to be scrapped.

I wouldn't worry to much about reactors, while they may still be hot they are certainly shut down.

ahahaha.

Ahem. Just because a reactor is shut down doesn't mean you want to get too close to it. And the Soviets were notorious for dumping old reactor cores in the Arctic Ocean.

The seventh photo down looks like a submarine to me, but pre-nuclear, something from the 1940s or 1950s.

You may want to take a better look at that photo as that is not a submarine. That is the exhaust funnel of a ship. Take note of all the deck features below it.

I don't think the 7th photo down is a funnel, it has a hatch and a ladder which made me think it was the conning tower of a sub. But looking a some of the features in the foreground I am not so sure.

The abandoned ones I have seen in my adventures where not that way. There were a few of them and most were half sunk with just the bow sticking up above the surface or rolled over onto the one beside it. They did look like they were neatly lined up years ago before they started to take on water.

The "hatch' is a rain cap. That way when the ship is not under power rain/snow does not build up in the exhaust system. Funnels have ladders as well. You should go look at some pictures of a submarine and you will find that this is not one.

I found these on Google Earth (they're in Petropavlovsk harbor) and there doesn't seem to be a sub.

I cede to piplnr65656's assessment. It's very likely a funnel.

To be fair though, through the Second World War plenty of subs had deck accoutrements and harsh lines. They weren't always swoopy fuck-off awesome.

But yes, a funnel and rain cap : )

Yeah your right; it's not rigged for underwater use!

One of those ships looks like it may be military, and reactors are just the start of what you can fumble into. Anyone who's worked on ships knows that even upright they are a strange, maze like, cramped environment. The water, corrosion, and salvaging that's be done to it can make it an extremely dangerous place indeed. Add some black ice, oil, grease, diesel fuel, ect. and you got a real mean mix. Steel is unforgiving; you fall hard, you can break bones, or fracture your skull without much effort.

Just when I thought I was out... they pulled me back in.

It is a funnel, and yes to be fair I can see how someone who has no clue could think that is a submarine. The only reason I pointed it out is because this seems to be a common problem. People glance at a photo and then make a horribly wrong statement without researching it at all.

This should be a good lesson to all new people. On here and in real life you should always be sure of your facts before you make a statement. Don't be afraid to make a statement but be ready to back it up.

Sorry I am stuck at an airport and I am getting very testy.

Hmm. I posted this link in the shipwreck thread, but I admit it also deserves its own since it's pretty damn neat. After all, everyone has seen satellite images of those shipwrecks scattered along the Russian coastline, but this is the first time anyone has posted photographs of them.

From my point of view those look like old fishing vessels. No subs.
