Photos of Asbestos

I know we have a lot of threads on asbestos, but neither this forum not the internet seems to have a concise set of photos showing people what asbestos actually looks like during a UE experience. I was curious if anyone might want to develop this thread with photos of asbestos that they took during UE. I have included a few of mine. I was thinking that this thread might help people to know what to look for. Many times, the asbestos is labeled, but my experience has shown this isn't always the case, unless I have mis-identified it in some cases.

The pipe on the right was labeled asbestos. The one on the right has been partially cut away by someone, but looks like the same material. If it is asbestos, it is likely dangerous because the fibers are able to get loose without difficulty.

This sign appeared on the large power plant structure seen above. apparently the whole thing is covered in asbestos! However, the outer sheeting appeared to be in good shape, and so does not likely pose much of an issue.

Sometimes elbows of pipes may retain asbestos, while the rest of the pipe has been upgraded. Here is an example. A lot of asbestos insulation seems to include the fabric style wrapping.

I actually didn't have one with me... The plant was in use as late as 2003, I didn't expect as much asbestos deterioration. I didn't hang around the stuff very long though!

Don't forget plaster, certain types of house siding, floor tiles, ceiling tiles, wall insulation, etc etc... asbestos is everywhere even when you least expect it. You cannot "look for" asbestos. Just wear your respirator.

I can't help you identify all forms, but Floor tiles in 99% of them asbestos was only in the 9x9" sized vinyl type tiles.

My house was built in 1851. The plumbing ovbiously added yearsssss later, every pipe in the basement is covered in asbestos but in excellent condition and no need to remove it yet. BUT, unfortunatly, the entire 2nd floor ceiling was covered in asb tiles which we had to remove because it was starting to fall apart. Shame, it looked like punched tin....

And that right there is the problem with asbestos is they put it in EVERYTHING.... Concrete, tiles, insulation.... Pretty much everything. I can tell when I'm in a room full of asbestos, because I can taste in in my throat, but it took me a while to figure out what that feeling and taste was...

You can't tell the presence of asbestos by appearance.

The very one pic appears to be encapsulated, but the label is there, so the presence of asbestos is known when it needs to be cut apart for work.

If the building is pre-1980s assume things contain asbestos.

Generally I just assume that the asbestos is already there. It seems to work out.

Just wear your mask no matter what building you go into. Unless its an active place. Easy enough.

to bad you didn't wear a mask but you did get out fast which is key! i lived in a house once where we had asbestos in the attic and when we went up to fix something it got all stirred up .... im not sure my dad has ever really recovered from it - thank you for the pictures its always nice to get a re-cap of what it looks like in case i run into it again, ive been lucky though!
