1) Border vs no border
I'd have to choose the border in this instance.
2) B&W or faint colour
B&W looks better
3) Closer framing or farther back
I think the weakness in both pictures is how they're framed. However, 1 is somewhat laid out better than 2.
4) High contrast vs more greys
It looks better with less sharp contrast. The trees in 2 are just kind of a tangle.

| | | | Number one, cropping in on the left to cut the first trees out a bit might look nice so it leads off closer to the stonework, but otherwise i think it looks great. Good work.
