| | | Big grain elevator - Fairborn, OH < on 2/18/2008 2:02 PM >
| | | Does anyone know whether or not the big grain elevator on Xenia Dr. in Fairborn, OH is abandoned or not? I never see anyone around there and it looks fairly run down. However, there seems to be a few working lights on the outside of the place, and it's dimly lit inside. Here's a map of it. It's the big building in the center, casting the long shadow. Here's some shots I got the other day while scouting it out:

| | | If that's it, in the center of that map link you sent, there's a lot of cars parked right outside of the place.. Even though Google's satellite pictures are fairly old sometimes, that's still not a good sign

That's the parking lot for a warehouse right to the East of the elevator.

| | | It looks fairly unused to me, from the satellite and your photos. However, this could just be because it's winter, I'm not sure if they would use this elevator for long term storage or not.

| | | To be short, who knows. I checked out the property two years ago and it was very much active -- after the aerial was taken. I'm not for sure what portions are used anymore, but it has activity and it does produce cement. I ran across articles that stated it was purchased by another cement company, but who knows. That plant may have gone under already. There are roads that the company may or may not use that extend out far past Dayton's beltway that leads to some old quarries, but not much else. | | | Clarification- Its a cement plant. Anyways, the property is somewhat active, but I'm pretty sure the building is not.

| | | Ahhhh. It's a CEMEX plant. Yeah, I found a press release from just two months ago that seems to indicate the site is still active. Not sure how active, but it probably means it's not safe to explore. Too bad. Looks like it'd be fun. Btw, tron, my trip down to Monument Ave got delayed, but I'm definitely hitting the area up this weekend. Looks like they're in the process of developing some new building complex there. Don't know how much longer it's gonna be there.

They have been 'developing' that parcel for the last two years. There used to be another half of the factory right around when I started exploring. It was sweet back then...It was gigantic and it had a huge cast iron spiral staircase. They are eventually going to tear town pretty much all of it with the exception of the two towers, but I believe they are still trying to secure funding to finish the demolition/cleanup. Its going to be what they call "tool town." Its an interesting idea...Basically going to be a big mixed-use development, but mostly commercial space. Try googling "tool town" or try searching that at daytondailynews.com. I hope you have fun there! I sure did over the years...

| | | Looks like it's gonna be called "Tech Town," now. They're still having trouble getting the funding through. Hopefully it'll be another couple years or so before she gets torn down.

| | | Ok, judging by the photos and what info you have layed out there, I would say there's a 75% chance that the place is vacant. Often times, property owners will leave that lights on in vacant structures as a common, but ineffective way of detering people from entering, but don't quote me on that. Lets assume for a second that the place IS in fact still in usage. That doesn't automatically mean that it's not explorable. Lots of times, grain elevators don't have jack shit for security/alarms. (nothing really to guard). I know of at least a few grain elevators round' these parts that are still in use, but have been explored several times. Alot of the active ones are not staffed on weekends, or nights, and are not alarmed. If you really want to be sure of the status on this particular location, do some reasearch into the company, and you should be able to figure it out from there. If it does turn out to still be operational; survey the place for a couple weeks, figure out when it is and isn't staffed and whether or not there is security there (you should be able to tell). When and if you find a window of time when it is un-staffed and obviously once you determine whether or not it has electronic and or other kinds of security, go for it man. | | | Very interesting. We have a Cemex plant here here in Orlando that is vacant as well. This place looks really neat man. If you want my 2 cents it looks like any risk you may have of this place being active would be worth taking given the building. My advise would be to go on a Sunday or something and if you are stopped, tell the truth and say you thought it was abandoned and you just wanted to take pictures. It sounds like this place won't be around for much longer so this might be your best opportunity if it's either going to become more active or demolished.

Yeah, I know, it looks like a lot of fun. The only thing I'm worried about, though, is that if it's still active, it might have some type of security measures (i.e. guards, cameras, motion detectors, etc.). Last week, I hit up another cement factory not too far from this one that's definitely not active (behind chained gates, no electricity, covered in graffiti), which I did explore, and which is incredible. In any case, for now, I'll probably get my cement factory fix at the factory I know is actually abandoned.
