How'd we get here, and how are we getting out of here?!
| | | Re: tips for a new urban explorer <Reply # 20 on 2/19/2008 5:44 PM >
| | | Posted by lostsoul so you think nikon? for that price range its really split between nikon and cannon. (where i live anyway) ive heard nikon is a bit better but not as reliable, however you say you've had yours 4 years? thats good news i think.
|
I had no loyalties before I bought my Nikon, but I have to say having used other peoples Canons I will NEVER by a Canon (except their point and shoots).... Canon makes better point and shoots than Nikon does, but Panasonic makes great point and shoots (they use Leica lenses). Those are my two cents you never know till you hold them and use them. I recommend becoming friends with people who have the camera you want.... Remember this though, at the end of the day whatever camera you get will only give you pictures as good as the pictures you take..

| | | Go out and look around and be safe. Take pics if you want and then take the advise of the photo folks if that is what you are into. Maybe your thing is the experience or the research/history aspect or all the above even. Ignore the bullshit from the boobs. At the end of the day enjoy that fact that you had fun and came home with all your pieces and parts intact. Oh yeah....gotta add the whole didn't get caught or arrested for the people that obsess over that.

NEVER ignore boobs
Whatev's. You can go alone. Sometimes it's better. It's never as safe though. Even when there seems like zero risk, you can get hurt, and from the very nature of the locations we tend to be interested in, a not so serious injury can become serious or fatal if you can't get help. Learn to listen to and trust your instincts. Keep your eyes open for things that people usually pass by. It's all around you. NEVER ignore boobs

Oops I guess I should have been more specific Boob - an ignorant or foolish person The one to ignore
Boob - either of two soft fleshy milk-secreting glandular organs on the chest of a woman If you should find these while exploring don't ignore either one of them

| | | Can you elaborate on the ice rink story? Thats sounds interesting. Regarding a camera. Have a look at some Olympus DSLR's. You can get a E-410 and a lens for a few hundred bucks these days.

| | | well time for an update. ive been back to the old theme park about 4 times now and had no luck gatting in. turns out a new disposal company has bought the car park area of the place or maybe the whole thing and they have securty. the guard sits on the gate right where my way in is! im still definately gonna get in there but ill have to wait till i get there and the guards are off duty. dont worry i havnt been ignoring boobs either! i had one night out and explored pretty much every abandonment in town and explored the previously mentioned skate rink. i didnt even take a camera though because it was the weekend and i went beer hunting after. anyway the story with the rink is me and me and 4 other entered the rink on the top level of the main road. we explored the skating area for a while and then found a whole in the floor with a ladder leading down in one of the back rooms. i was the last to go down and just as i was on the top runk someone kicked the front door open and screamed "WTF are ya doin in here". i jumped down and we ran to the basement area and sat down considering options, all the time being able to hear them upstairs bashing things in and talking to each other. we figured they would find the trap door soon enough so decided to make heaps of noise reefing open a roller door that must not have been opened in a few years. it took all of us and alot of swear words but we got it 2 feet up and just managed to get out as they came down the stairs. the door opened onto the lower level on the back street. unfortunately we didnt see who was chasing us but yeah scared us at the time lol when i went back there i just amde things easier for myself i asked a homeless person guarding the door at the frontfor some useful info in return for a half pack of ciggies. they told us no one was already in there and they would call out to us if anyone was comming in. made things way better anyways ill get some photos soon!

| | | It's always scary when you run across others in the abandoned. Doesn't matter WHO they are, but especially if they are screaming and yelling at you, it doesn't help any...

| | | I'm new as well but the few times I have gone out have taught me several things. 1. Watch your feet. This may sound obvious but you'd be surprised how easily you can be distracted by your surroundings. A few days ago my friend stepped into a hole, in a dark room, and luckily he caught himself. He would have fallen at least 20ft and hit quite a few pipes on the way down. I, that same day, was almost blown off a steep roof when a gust of wind kicked up. I would have fallen straight into power lines and then at least 40ft. Always be aware of your surroundings, close calls shouldn't have been what taught us that. Also, I'd carry a knife. Not just for defense but because it's a useful tool. Worst case, yes, you can defend yourself but I'd run before I got in a knife fight with a crazy kid or homeless person. In reply to the whole camera thing, I got a Rebel xt a month or so ago and love it to death. Don't let anyone convince you Nikon is better, it's not, and don't let anyone convince you the same about Canon. Both make excellent cameras and anyone who tells you they don't is an idiot. I'll give you the great advice given to me, go to a camera store and try the cameras out. See which you are more comfortable with, which feels better in your hands, which has more intuitive controls and menu. I'd also stick to Nikon or Canon just for the lens options but other companies obviously make good cameras. Also, if you're broke, look for deals on used cameras at craigslist or other places. This is a good place to find used Canon stuff http://photography...umdisplay.php?f=14 I saw a used 20D there for what I got my camera for(albeit mine was new). I've seen 350D's go for incredibly cheap as well. Lastly, if you do go with the Canon I highly, highly, highly recommend you just get the body and buy the IS version of the kit lens seperate instead of getting just the kit lens. The IS version costs about %200 but the optics are, somehow, amazing for the price and it has a silent and very effective image stabilizing system which is ideal for UE photography. If that's out of your budget then get a 50mm 1.8. You can get them for less than a hundred bucks and even though they don't zoom the optics are great, it's incredibly fast, and considered to be possibly the best lens for the money around.

| | | Be careful about carrying tools (knifes too) they can change and increase a trespassing charge! Research your state law before you make a decision! I carry no tools what so ever, but instead opt for the non-lethal approach. Think about a flash or a spotlight, both can disorient an attacker, and be useful for the photography. EVERY camera company makes cameras and they each have their own advantages. Canon and Nikon both don't make an IS body, but Sony does. Nikon used to use Sony CMOS and CCD, where as Canon makes there. Fuji buys Nikon bodies and changes that chips.... Another though and while this is a minor thing, Canon changed their mount when the released the DSLRs so that an EF-S lens can not fit on a strait EF mount. The end result of that is that you can't use teleconverters with an EF-S lens. I think my point is do a lot of reading.. A LOT before making a decision about a camera. What company makes what YOU want... Before you buy any lenses, think about what you want from the lens. I own one VR (IS) lens, but my wider angles are NOT VR (IS) because it detracts from the image quality. The other thing is if your going to put any large amount of money into a lens consider finding a "full frame" lens so that if you want to shoot 35mm, or down the road you buy a full frame DSLR, you have the option to keep your lens. Just food for thought...
