How to write a *short* trip report?
< on 2/6/2008 9:45 AM >
Posted on Forum: UER Forum

When I write an expo report it usually turns out long. That means it takes a few hours to write it and that means I don't write many trip reports and have a huge backlog.

I tried to write a report about my last two trips as short as I could, but still:

http://www.xs4all..../duisburg1000.html
600+ words
22 pictures

http://www.xs4all..../duisburg2000.html
900+ words
25 pictures

Do you have some examples where you wrote about a day long - and succesful - expo using less words and less pictures?

Note:

It would be quickest to just upload the pictures, but I think that's lazy and lame. What is your opinion on that?

I try to upload pictures and give reasonable captions for each one, usually in the order they were taken, or if one seems to fit better somewhere else. The captions don't have to tell a perfect story, just the general gist, as a lot of the people in these forums have been on enough explores to know what normally goes on. Try to be witty, but, don't try too hard. If something stands out to you, or you liked better, put more description in to it. Also have an enticing starter and strong close. Maybe a paragraph or two for those at the most usually.. That's just the way I do it, you'll have to figure out your own style of course. Good luck!

Yeah, I don't see the problem with well done reports, especially with lots of pictures, because that's what people want to see.

Keep up the good work.

personally descriptions of other peoples exploration bore the shit out of me. i'd much rather look at pictures of youre exploration than hear your description. as an explorer i like looking at abandoned things, rather than reading about them.

This is Petr F'ing Kazil you're talking to. How about a little more respect, eh? Your Myspace page bores the shit out of me.

I'm just baffled that you'd respond to this request for comment with "they bore the shit out of me." I know this may be tough to think about, but maybe you've classed yourself out of their target audience.

Why is it that so many old timers here think they have a right to treat Noobs like shit? Respect has to be earned dude. I don't know who Petr F'ing Kazil is. I don't know who you are. Try do this for a change instead of heaping shit on Noobs; Earn our respect by telling us about what it is that you do and treating us with the respect that you want us to treat you with. If you treat us without respect, don't expect us to treat you with any respect.

Back on topic.

Nice to meet you Petr F'ing Kazil. Strange name you have there. I like your reports, and your pictures rock dude. That place is huge! I liked the pictures you took of the artwork as well. The Zebra and babe were cool. Those tunnel pictures were great. It is strange how there is strip lighting in one point, and then it is like the narrow tunnel. It does remind me of a computer game yeah. Wow, Infrasonic, my new word of the month. Nice!

Caution! This user is a wise ass and may use sarcasm.

Is my back pack good enough for UERing?

Propaganda is no noob, he's been around for a year and posted a number of boring, context-free galleries of mildewed and water-damaged rooms from around New Hampshire (when he's not sharing such delightful gems as his arrest for tagging, his frequent intoxication and my all-time favourite, "she was scheduled for demolition so taking her uterus was ok."). I'd really be interested to learn more about these places in NH, or at least I would be if he cared enough to write more than two lines about each place to supplement his mediocre photography.

Petr Kazil is one of the fathers of what the kids are calling 'urban exploration'. He was active in the online exploration community when that community consisted of a listserv, and when you read his site you immediately recognize that a) he's doing something different than all the faddish hoopleheads in North America, and b) he's doing it for a bit more than to just get some photos of fallen paint chips on dusty tables and feel cool about it.

And this is why a guy like Propaganda is "bored to shit" by such obvious wastes of time, and why Petr Kazil, looking at his massive pile of discoveries waiting to be typed out, and comparing that to the photo-dump approach of so much of today's online community, wonders if he isn't doing something wrong. No Petr, you're doing everything right.

thanks kowalski, its nice that you took the time to do a post-search in order to compile that little collection of personal attacks and out of context quotes. again, i dont see how my arrest for tagging an active builiding, or my "frequent intoxication" is relevant. i didnt mean to send you flying off the handle, i only stated my opinion. im sorry that your super-exclusive hobby appeals to younger people.

pwn. That do?

ps. Mr Kazil, I remember reading your name years ago when I first got into exploring and spent a lot of time just finding other explorers and seeing what people were up to. How times change huh. Good to see you're still around - you probably never left right?

Yay! More dick waving by Kowalski.

To the OP and others: Just post in a style you feel most comfortable with. If that includes a photo gallery, denoted by numbers, and a brief description with each, that's fine. If it's solely photos, that's fine. If it's a 10-page essay with a few photos, that's fine. It's still contributing and people will still view it regardless.

I like your reports, but find your layout distracting, that's all. Your not using too many pictures so I wouldn't recommend using less. I'd just recommend a layout change.

Uploading only photos is lazy. Photos entertain the eyes, words entertain the mind- and they're better together. More words, please!

Hi guys, thanks everyone for the comments! I have been positively stimulated by the "your text is boring" comment and was not offended at all.

Also I have to admit I was flattered by the many positive comments I got and by the fact that I have still a kind of "name" in the community. But otherwise - I didn't mind at all having sunk into obscurity. There are many others who are more productive, daring and original than I am. (*)

I tried to write a less boring trip report with less words. I don't think I really succeeded because I still needed 700+ words, but that's for a 4 day trip.

http://www.xs4all....l/berlinccc00.html

I would be happy if you cold give me a link to some of your best, short and non-boring trip reports. I promise I'll try to learn from them

(*) And sometimes originality comes from the most unexpected directions ... imagine my surprise when I came home one day from work and who was parked in front of my door? Panic! He looked different, with neatly cut hair, had lost some weight and was looking energetic. He had bought a camper and was touring Europe. So he was really doing what he had planned! Now I know the many different opinions about Panic on this forum, but this impressed me. Has anyone heard from him lately?

Oh this is rich.

* This web site is one of the first about Urban Exploration on the Internet. It was probably the 4th or 5th and was definitely around before Ninjalicious's Infiltration web site.
* This is the longest running UE web site online.
* This is the second biggest Urban Exploration web site on the Internet. The first biggest, UER.ca being a group effort.
* I was the second to put videos of urban exploring on the Internet. The first site with UE videos is long gone.
* I was the first Australian Urban Explorer to suggest exploring the Paris Catacomb, and the first to explore them, though I was not an Urban Explorer at the time.
* I was the first Urban Explorer to do big overseas trips for exploring.
* I have made four massive overseas trips to explore, including three round the world ones.
* I was one of the first Urban Explorers to visit both the Paris Catacombs and Chernobyl.
* Despite being from Australia, I have have attended 4 OPEXs.
* I have explored over 200 drains in 12 countries.
* I have explored more abandoned underground rail stations than anyone else n the world.
* I have explored 3 abandoned and 1 semi active missile silos.
* I have explored more abandoned buildings tan I can remember including whole abandoned cities and towns.
* I have done all this despite constant damaging of my reputation by some members of the Cave Clan, and some other Urban Explorers, many of whom have never met me, and only spread rumors started by others.

...

I'm really confused by this post. Was there a point to it, or are you just waving your ego around? No one said a word about you.

At least I agree with your response to the original question: Write what you like.
