Oh, BRAVO to these photos! They capture the ship's atmosphere beautifully, I especially like the colours in image #6.

Thanks mate. I've got a lot of exteriors and many more interiors. I didn't want to flood the forum with too many photos though. I'll see about posting some of them up tonight if people are interested.

There's been a spread of seeming MIS-information on what is happening to the ship. A Pakastani captain and Romanian crew have been preparing her for the voyage. We think the misinformation is purposeful and meant to distract from what is really happening - breaking. They've also planned the towing of the ship during a time when many people are distracted with the elections and won't be paying much attention to the ship being towed out the Golden Gate. This all happened at once and noone at the dry dock seems to have the 'real' story behind where she is going. The dry docks seemed only to find out she was finally leaving about a week and a half before it is supposed to happen.

I'm trying to see if I can get off work to shoot the ship being towed under the Golden Gate. We don't quite know when exactly she's leaving though...

I am afraid you are correct. I am a member of the Steamship Historical Society of America (SSHSA) and the information we have is that she is headed to Alang (India for breaking).

The fate that awaits our beloved

There is a time when the operation of the machine becomes so odious, makes you so sick at heart, that you can't take part; you can't even passively take part, and you've got to put your bodies upon the gears and upon the wheels, upon the levers, upon all the apparatus, and you've got to make it stop...

The fate that awaits our beloved

The only problem with that is that they don't really care about the environment there.

I wonder what they would do if they managed to prevent a ship that's in the end of its life cycle from sailing to the scrapyards.

At last known she still not yet in Singapore, and it doesn't appear for certain she'll be destroyed she hosted Ronald Reagan, Lucille Ball and a Saudi King.

It's too bad honestly. I had never heard of the ship until now, but it feels like I've lost a friend.

Since the destination can't be pinned down, I'm guessing we're going to see a sunk-for-the-insurance deal.

NCL is getting away with all sorts of violations of international law on this one.

Here's a shot of the Indy leaving the SF Bay. We chased it around the bay that day. Four of us took off work and took up positions in different locations to capture it leaving the bay. I hauled ass on my motorcycle to catch it from outside the gate after shooting it against the SF skyline.

Respirator? No. I held my breath.

I do not see a tow line. Is she under her own power ??

As much as I dont want to see her go, PCB's are not really an excuse. The only components on her which would contain PCB's are oil filled transformers, and they are very easy to deal with. Of course she is laden with asbestos, but asbestos is not nearly as big of a deal as most folks think.

And for the record, there is no such thing as "international law". Although this phrase is very often used by the media, the very fact that the word "international" is used before "law" means it is not law. Sovereign Nations subscribe to nothing which could be construed as 'international law', there are international agreements international conventions and even international 'etiquite' but thank heavens, the USA does not ever have to submit to anything called "international law"...... so far at least.....

Indeed, the US and Singapore are signatory to an "agreement" on the import and export of toxic waste, but this is not international law. No such thing exists as international law.

Again, please dont construe the above as an excuse to justify the scrapping of this magnificent vessel, because I feel it is indeed a disgrace to scrap her. But we in the United States of America need to be very observant and cautious of anything described as "international laws" or the abuse of the phrase international law....

Just a pet peeve of mine, sorry for the rant.... If I have stolen 3 minutes of your life wasting time reading this I apologize wholehartdly, but you need to understand what 'sovereign nation' means....

That's a great photo. I can just barely see a tow line, but that little tug behind is workin pretty hard. Is that a fire boat display or rooster tail?
Take the boat and line out in PS?, the warm tone looks great, almost vintage.

What a crime to scrap this incredible vessel. (As are the work conditions for the scrappers) Where are the wealthy people with vision? A floating casino, hotel, stores, anything is better than scrapping. We do this quite a lot here. (Artificial Reef Society below)

I got the 2nd? officers desk for 60 bucks and a case of beer, enjoyed taking it out. It locks up, and I get more use than the divers would. Lots left for them to enjoy. We watched her sink. A huge flotilla of small boats. A great treat for divers. The Mackenzie never saw any real action, and can't compare to the S.S. Independence.

It ain't over 'till it's over. I hope something weird happens on the way...

Thanks all for feedback. There is a significantly larger ocean going tug pulling her from the front, out of frame to the right. The smaller tug is throwing the rooster tail and it's nothing to do with fire. I at first thought it was some kind of 'display' but it's just this tugs engine systems doing it.

I'm working on throwing up my large version of the image. Been too busy...
