Aww... My very first UE

So, after months of perusing through UE photos and stories and thinking how fun it seemed, I decided to get off my butt and do a bit myself. So, here's the first in what will hopefully be many photo-documented UE adventures.

For my first target, I chose an old vehicle tow service that I drive past on my way to work/college every day, which has been abandoned for probably three years now. It was a place called "Thomas Towing Service" (woot) in Fairborn, OH, located here on the map:

The main problem with this location is that it is on a very busy road and is a bit conspicuous. Maybe it wasn't the best pick for a rookie like myself, but it was the most convenient location for me, distance-wise. Since there was no way I could infiltrate it in broad daylight with the amount of traffic that goes by, I planned on going at 3 AM. So, I left my car in a nearby 24-hour grocery store parking lot and made the chilly stroll over to my location (it was about 20 degrees F).

Here's the front of the place:

01

Two big columns jutting out of the crumbling parking lot pavement where, I assume, a sign for the business once existed.

02

A weird looking lamp post thing also in the parking lot area:

03

Since the building itself is connected to a fenced-off lot in the back/side area, I decided trying to get into the building through the back by going over the fence would be the easiest way. Unfortunately, the top of fences were lined with several rows of barbed wire. So I meandered around the fence to see if there were any openings. I found one, but to my dismay it was firmly locked:

04

Crossing my fingers, I continued walking around the perimeter and, surprisingly, it looks like someone else had already solved the problem! A portion of the fence was knocked down:

05

I entered, and to my immediate right was a little outer room area:

06

Inside was some kind of orange contraption, which I have no idea what it is (maybe someone else recognizes this?):

07

There were no cars in the lot, but I did find a watercraft in surprisingly good condition (more surprised no one's stolen it yet--I wonder why the owner is keeping it in such an unsafe place?):

08

Another contraption of some kind against the side of the building (still no idea what this is):

09

Unfortunately, after diligently searching the entire back wall of the building, I can find no doors that lead inside. I snap a couple shots of the interior through the windows (none of which open):

10

Another window-shot from outside (I want in!):

11

I was pretty disappointed, but I didn't want to haul my ass all the way out here in the bitter cold to snap a few shots of an empty tow yard. I just had to at least TRY to get in through the front, even if it was going to be more tricky than I had anticipated. So, I waited patiently and watched the traffic stream by on the road, while a decent amount of people still bustled around in the 24-hour Waffle House right next door and the busy pub across the street. It didn't help ease my nerves that I saw not one, but TWO, patrol cars drive by in the couple minutes that I spent lurking in the shadows. But, suddenly the road was empty--there were no cars in sight! I decided it was now or never. So, I grew a pair of balls real fast and ran out to the front of the building. Main doors locked, obviously. But, what's this? Someone else has conveniently knocked out one of the glass panels in the right-most garage door! I crawl through and catch my breath. Getting in was the hardest part.

Here's the first shot I snapped from inside (I came in through the bottom middle panel on the leftmost garage door in the below picture):

12

To my disappointment, the main area is pretty much empty. Just a lot of trash and crap covering the floor. Found some interesting greenish-blue columns of some sort:

13

A shot of the motor that moves the garage doors. Wonder what that little megaphone looking thing above it is? Also, note what is clearly a ghost toward the upper-right hand corner:

14

There were a lot of unhinged doors and door-frames sitting around the place:

15

Including what looked like a big, metal vault door with a couple bullet indentations in it:

16

I found a small, carpeted back room, which was probably an office. The wall to the right of the doorway is apparently made of FIRE:

17

Some busted chairs and an I-don't-know-what is all there is to see in here:

18

The pics aren't that great because I couldn't really see much while I was in there, plus the fact that I was really nervous and was just taking pictures all willy-nilly so I could get out of there ASAP. Looking back, I probably didn't have that much to worry about--this UE was mostly just breaking the psychological fear barrier of doing something of this nature for the very first time. Perhaps if I'm brave I'll go back some morning right before sunrise and wait for a little light so I can take some more decent pictures.

All in all, not a very amazing place, but it'll have special significance to me.

Nice, but you should go check out downtown if you want to see some really neat stuff.

There is a building, on off of monument, that is big and fun to explore.

Its easy too.

the other mystery object is an air compressor. used to run pneumatic tools. the horn is used for a couple of reasons, primarily it's easier than trying to shout over the din of a full service garage. good job man, keep it up and thanks for sharing.

Oh my God, I went there today to scope out that building and it is beyond gorgeous. What was the security situation like when you were there? Anything to be concerned about?

Security is lol.

Just walk in.

Stay outta the basements, explore the northern tower (the one towards the river) its cooler that way. Be weary of bums and scrappers...

I grew up in Dayton and basically cut my teeth at this place. Many summer eve's were spent hanging out there. It used to be a lot bigger.

I'm going on the weekend with some friends when I have free time. Is the name you scrawled actually "tron_2.0"?

Yes. Look on the roof of the north tower. It may still be on the east end of the outside of the elevator shack.

That place is so fun!

That 'no smoking' sign is sitting right in front of me on my wall. Actually two of them.

Booyah!
