In Alaska we just nail old WWII runways to buildings:

http://en.wikipedi.../wiki/Marston_mats

This stuff is freakin' everywhere. WWII prefab quonset huts are also everywhere, re-used as stores and warehouses. I hope someday to find an abandoned quonset hut secured with abandoned Marsden matting, which will cause a huge military surplus irony explosion.

Turn off the internet and go play outside.

Yeah, it must not be very common out here, because this is the first time i had seen anything like it. The two buildings on either side were just covered in 3/4" plywood, but this one looked quite intimidating. I'm sure that we could get in if we really tried, but we weren't feeling very much like breaking crap, and there were at least 3 junkies hanging around the property. Didn't really want to attract their attention to our shiny camera equipment. People seem to agree that its fairly simple to get off, so we may just have to try it. The only problem is that if we do get it off then there is most likely a locked door or window underneath, and those i'm not too keen on smashing. Who knows though, maybe they left a window open for ventilation or something thinking that it was secure with all this steel crap.

Normally how they work (in the UK) is that there are steel bands going THROUGH the open window / door behind, fitting into a support frame BEHIND the wall - this allows ventilation and makes for a good fit.

90% of the time once the Sitex is removed you have an entrance the size of whatever is behind.

Chris...

We all had ostriches. My dad had an ostrich farm! I remember one day someone came in and said the high altitude bombing of Kosovo had been a limited success, so we all went out and celebrated… by killing an ostrich and boiling it in kiwi fruit.

Awesome. Now scrappers can make money before they even get inside!

I can't believe I'm saying this, but that could be great! They take the VPS crap off for us to get it, they've made their money, so there is no reason for them to enter the building and screw it up. Basically if it works out that way, more intact sites for us and easy access, but I think that's a pipe dream...

Yeah, maybe if scappers just drove around in little Ford Escorts.

In reality, it's usually big old pickup trucks. And they return to the building over and over again, until there's nothing left to steal. They'll knock out whole exterior walls to accomplish their goals. You've never been to Gary, Indiana, have you?

Can't say that I have EVER been to Indiana... Got pictures of the damage? I guess I wasn't thinking about the mentality of a scrapper, but the mentality of a sane person... One who works (or in their case) takes what the need they lays low for a while....

No, I don't have any specific pictures uploaded showing that kind of damage. But if you're curious, do a search for pictures of the ambassador apartments in Gary. The damage to the building is extensive, and it was done by scrappers, not vandals. I've seen a lot of buildings like it, sadly.

Scrappers cannot be understood from the perspective of "sane" people. Scrappers will do anything to get scrap metal. They'll even steal copper gutters off of active buildings. Some scrappers are now targeting pickup trucks and raised vehicles and stealing the catylitic converters for the few ounces of platinum contained inside. There was even a couple scrappers in canada who cut down a huge copper statue in a city park and chopped it up to sell for scrap. They are nuts.

You know I remember talking to a police officer out here in California who was saying that scrappers getting into active construction sites has become the number one crime in their area. That if they don't dry wall the wall before leaving for the night, all the copper will be gone by morning, and if they do, it's not uncommon to have the wall ripped apart again. That and the rural areas having problems with generators being stolen for the copper....
