| | | | Anyone else shoot UE videos? < on 1/29/2008 4:59 AM >
| | | Obviously a lot of photographs get taken at the various locations users from this community visit. On occasion users post information on some pretty interesting and unique documentaries that are made by them or featured on major television networks. I was wondering if anyone shoots video as well as photography when they visit an abandonment. I have been thinking about doing it more regularly when I go exploring, however after a few attempts, I found that pictures are usually the stronger medium for documenting a location in it's current state. I have see users like Heinrich put a collection of photographs mixed together with audio to make a short clip and that turned out pretty cool but I wanted to try some "before and after" video. So this summer I finally received permission to visit an abandoned amusement park near where I live. I woke up late that morning and didn't grab a tripod so it was all shot handheld, which makes it kind of shaky but I used video and photos from when the park was active and mixed them in with the photos from the park in it's current decaying state. Here it is: http://www.youtube...atch?v=e1rC2O-Ig0s I was thinking about doing this on a regular occasion for my website when I have historical photos of a location to mix in for a "before and after" segment type of deal. If you wouldn't mind taking a look and the video and providing some feedback, I'd appreciate to hear what you guys like/dislike about the idea and video. | | | Hey I liked it. definitely cool to see the active and abandoned beside each other. The only thing I could say to make it better would be that all circle shots were making me kind of dizzy by the end, and mabey instead of all stationary shots some of you walking around could add some variety. Either way you did a pretty awesome job shooting that and editing it all together, its more than I could do.

Thanks for the feedback, I worried that the "home movie" style of shooting would make some people feel sick, i hope to film one of these next time with a tripod, remote, and a lit bit more of a polished and professional style like I do with projects for school. Did the music go with it ok?

| | | Cool. Hand held UE videos don't do it for me, but that almost comes with the territory. Some day I'd like to build camera track/dolly out of thin PVC pipe for easy assembly. Not sure how much I'd like to lug around another bag, though.

| | | i do. good UE vids are hard to find mostly 'cause UErs need to be stealthy and ready to split on a moments notice. so lugging a lot of equipment around and setting up shots is hard. but these derelict places are so dramatic that i think they deserve a more immersive experience than just posts on the web. i've done two that i'm proud of and working on a third. this is my last one: http://www.gardenb.../the_papermill.htm that vid took me pretty much all last winter to shoot. i tried submitting it to like 10 film festivals and it got rejected by all but one. what little feedback i heard was: 'we don't look at urban exploration videos'.

| | | I film when I explore also. It's difficult to do both because there's a lot of equipment and filming takes a lot more time. Here is a trailer I did a few months ago: http://www.youtube...atch?v=U52JmzwoWmQ [last edit 1/30/2008 5:29 AM by Mark Vicious - edited 1 times]

| | | If you are going to do more vids like this, you might want a steadycam. I stumbled across a D.I.Y. site about home building one, might want to check it out. http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~johnny/steadycam/

I can tell you put a lot of time into your video; it's absolutely a supreme creation. The time lapse shadows and broken light are not only cool to look at but express the aspect of time/decay ever further. That's the kind of stuff I'd like to do. Keep trying to get your films recognized! I'm going to watch your others.

| | | i think the idea is an excellent one, there is such a huge difference in tone between still and moving images, a certain sense of progression and movement even in a stationary bit of cinema. I don't personally tend to film because i don't have access to equipment i think would do it justice. My handycam just doesnt seem to catch the mood of the place quite like a nice photo does, nor does the light permit me to film, generally, without some kind of fairly bright secondary light source I would carry, which isn't feasible if i'm trying to avoid unwanted attention. more power to you, though, preservation in many forms!

Your videos are great, but I have to say its the editing . Alot of videos just suck because ppl pick music that doesn't go with the pace of the film, or jerky camera pans....geez, if anyone has a camera there is no excuse not to have a tripod. Even a shit tripod is better then nothing. That and the zoom and pull back effect has been done to death.
