For some reason. I totally lost it and laughed like a jackass when I read that.

Wow, the meetup seems to be growing! I'm ashamed I've been missing out on the past bunch, I'm gonna try showing up more frequently. Can't make it this month, though... :[

Oh, and Robert, I haven't had time to read through the whole thread and don't know if this was discussed or not, but some friends and I were recently checking up on the Swift plant and had the friendly neighborhood po-po stop by. They said that even though they generally don't mess with non-gangsters during the week, the security guard in the back corner can talk to his supervisor and they might be fairly inclined to grant some exploration privileges. Just thought y'all might want that bit of info.

Very cool, maybe they are starting to lighten up. When I talked to the owners, they said nobody gets in, and the cops said they were arresting anyone they caught in there. Maybe they figured out their time is better spent dealing with gangbangers.

When I went to the Swift back in December we happened to run into a guy who was going in with full permission from the people who own it. Apparently he's the fire marshal out there, so the security guard came around and let him in and he let us tag along. As we were walking over to it we were passed by about 3 cop cars in the short time to get from the stockyards to the buildings, so I can see how it would be a good idea to do it legally.

I've had a slight change of plans because my roommate might be attending a car show this Saturday, and she was the one I was going to drag with me to come out there. There is a chance it will fall through and we'll come out there for probably just Saturday, but at this point I don't know. I hope I'll be able to make it! And I'm totally game for exploring whatever, legalish or not

So I think we should get one of us to organize a meet of all the UER type people in Texas. A Texas meet up, preferably near a ghost town. I guess we could let any interested foreigners (primarily Americans,) from any of the border states (OK, LA and AR, NM) show up too. Think about it though y'all. it could be fun. And, if we time it right, we can have a campfire with some smores.

Last minute update on my part -- I probably *won't* be there, which will be sad cuz it sounds like it's going to be full of awesome win. But since I'm still the nominal organizer (fancy way of saying "I'm the one who can update the event listing"), I definitely want it to be a good time for all.

I think Fred's sounds like a great alternative. It's right on the edge of the Cultural District, southeast of 7th & University. That means there's plenty to see within walking distance, particularly the Will Rodgers Complex. Don't miss out on the "cow tunnel" under John Justin Arena (but watch yer step!).

Any objection if I change the location from Buffalo Brothers near TCU to Fred's? I want to do it soon, since some folks don't follow the discussion as closely, and the event listing is the primary source of info.

Ah man. I was looking forward to meeting you Robert!

Me too. Wanting to swap stories about Oklahoma explorations!

If it were up to me, I'd definitely lean toward the 7th & University area. It's easy to get to by train+bus from Dallas, it's got plenty of (non-infiltration) photo ops within walking distance, and it's convenient to several "more advanced" explorations.

I'm still open to be persuaded, but if I don't hear something definite tonight, I'll change the event listing to Fred's so that the auto-generated announcements point folks to the right place.

Alright -- Fred's it is. Take pictures and make me just sick knowing what an awesome time I missed!

Remember, if you can't spot the explorers right away, ask for Amanda Hugankis. If they look at you funny, just tell them you're with Food Network.

We loaded into the fish suburban, me seripham, and pkrearden, and blasted out onto the roadway headed for Freds.

Well....The damn truck doesn't really blast anywhere, but it kind of weaved around and rattled a lot.

I'll be the first to say it, Fred's was a bad idea. During the summer they do live music during the afternoon, and the place was packed. We snagged a picnic bench and hung a no trespassing sign on it -- only to notice there were four yuppies already sitting there. They pretended not to see us, we tried to look menacing hoping they would go away. intimidation fail.

At some point an empty picnic table opened up and Pkrearden pounced on it like some sort of animal that pounces on stuff really fast. It was a double edged sword of a picnic table though:
1-We had the whole table to ourselves
2-We were yards closer to a really bad oklahoma folk singer who was doing a 12 part ballad to a downed power line. Seripham said a little bit of his soul was dying with every flubbed bar chord.

Gradually the FW Rhino baiting crew started showing up, and we all placed our food orders. A word about Freds:

I love Freds. great burgers, a downright spiritual history with the community. but Fred's texas is still using the same grill they had in the late 1700's when they were serving Bison Burgers to the Comanche. They have never updated the kitchen, so they aren't really set up to handle the kind of volume they do on a saturday with a bad folk singer bringing in the Yuppies who think this must be how it feels to be "artsy". It took about 3 hours to get our burger. Artimas was able to walk all the way from Oak Cliff before we got our burgers.

Eventually, we ate our burgers and started discussing with Happie Dayz where these abandonments were that she had planed for us. it was at that point we noticed that she had ditched us, and left us with no plans and burning, painful hole in our hearts (it was that or the epic folk song about being an Oklahoma girl growing up in the middle of a grass fire). Foul betrayal aside, we endeavored to persevere -- we decided to set off for an abandonment that none of us had actually seen other than in photos. (cont)

We headed north, towards the abandonment of great wonder. We made a couple of turns, drove through a neighborhood and found ourselves at the back gate. I got out of my truck, and was immediately accosted by the other members of the party:

"You aren't seriously going to park there?"

"why not? We're right at the gate, out of sight of the main road."

"We right in the middle of someone's quinceanera -- your parked on the cake."

"Why would they be having a quincenera in the middle of the street"

"Dude, your in their yard. I think that's a Piñata stuck in your grill"

"good cover, we'll pop the hood and pretend the Piñata caused it to overheat"

Eventually, they convinced me (they being both my fellow explorers and the Latino family with the ax handles) that we should look for a less conspicuous entry.

We divided into three groups, the first two started their trek along the railroad right of way, and I dropped our group off hot to infil from the other direction. I kept a cell phone so that they could call for an emergency extraction if needed.

After driving around for what semed like days, I got the call giving me directions on how to make entry into the compound. I parked my truck a few blocks from the quincenera and took a long stroll down the tracks. Seripham called to check on me and the simple act of trying to talk on the phone and remain vertical proved to much for me. My feet came out from under me, my camera went bouncing down the rails and I fell brutally across the tracks, tearing a hole in my had and bashing up my right leg pretty good-- and of course throwing my back out.

Eventually after 8 more phone calls I found the entrance to the place...and conluded that if I stayed there for another 8 months and starved myself I wouldn't be able to fit throught that entry point. I shoved my camera through the gap and took a couple of shots. I turned around and headed for the truck.
