It's very cool. I've always loved abandoned churches.
This one was recently rehabbed so I have hardwood or slate flooring throughout, and all the modern amenities...high-efficiency air and heat, high efficiency water, the works. It's very nice, but I find there's something about it that makes it feel not like "home," but more like "a place to live." I can't explain why.
But still--living in an old church is very cool to me.

I found a 1930's brick school on ebay, that if it were here I'd be all over it. The gym would make a perfect shop and the building has enough character to pass for a home.Of course there is nothing to get your hands on around here. My house being vacant for two years is the closest I'll get to abandoned conversions. I removed a wall so that counts as a conversion, right?

I dislike gutting/coring a building and throwing in super modern stuff in it's place. I've seen it happen to a ton of old tobacco lofts in my town and it makes me sad. You could at least match the new interior architecture to the character of the building, and no i don't mean the nouveau industrial crap either. mixed feelings i suppose.

All other spaces would be delineated by movable screens, including the sleeping spaces, so that one could create rooms as needed. Need an extra bedroom for guests? Simple move some screens around for privacy and there you go.
I got inspired by seeing how the Clock Tower was restored in the Dockyard here. The Dockyard had been all but abandoned by the British after WWII and has been undergoing restoration and reuse since the late 70's. The lower floor of the clocktower building is now shops and the upper floor is a huge, beautiful, wide-open space used for receptions and the like. The wooden floor is gorgeous as well.
Nuts, I'm sure, but what the heck.

It's also an insult to what made the church's architecture special. The reason why the church is architecturally significant because it was supposed to pay tribute to the grand idea of attaining a higher state of existence (an afterlife) as a community. People came together some time ago and raised the funds to build it grandly to celebrate their faith. Splitting it up into 28 units sold in a market is senseless given the history of the building. Jesus, after all, threw the money changers out the temple. Now, it's like the temple is theres. And yes, many of these congregations read the New Testament.
