Uptown Chicago

I live around uptown and it can be pretty creepy sometimes. there are a lot of beautiful buildings around here, but I keep forgetting to look to see if there are any possibly good places to check out. I'm sure there are quite a few hobos squatting in anything abandoned...

also, I'm worried about going alone, as I'm a petite female.

Anyone here in Chicago, good stories, anything? wanna be friends? XD

what dixiesquare said. for some reason, chicago hates UER. if it's explorers you're looking for, you'll have much better luck on that forum.

as for uptown, there is something that i've been trying to get into every time i've been out there for the last year and a half or so...even got as close as looking in the front door and smelling decay. without getting too specific, you can see the place from the Lawrence el platform.

Hate is such a strong word!!!

It was just in the paper yesterday that LiveNation is looking into buying the Uptown. But it is not clear who owns it at this point. It may actually be the City!! The estimate is 40 million to get it up to code.

Live Nation has eyes on Uptown
REAL ESTATE | Northerly Island promoter seeks to restore theater's glory

January 9, 2008
BY DAVID ROEDER Sun-Times Columnist
Live Nation Inc., the concert promoter that manages the outdoor performance stage at Northerly Island, is negotiating with city officials to take over the landmark Uptown Theatre, 4816 N. Broadway.

The 1925 building has been mostly unused for 25 years. But Live Nation is said to be interested in restoring it to its former glory and using its 4,300-seat auditorium for concerts and other events.

» Click to enlarge image It's been about a quarter of a century since the Uptown Theatre has been used regularly. If it can deal with all the potential roadblocks, Live Nation Inc. would like to change that.
(Al Podgorski/Sun-Times file)

Possible hitches -- and there are many -- include a city subsidy for what could be a $40 million restoration. Also, the city has a lien of at least $1 million on the property because of emergency repairs it had to order on the building. The City Council has given Mayor Daley's administration authority to acquire the Uptown via condemnation.

City Hall and Live Nation had no immediate comment. Ownership of the Uptown is a matter of litigation.

A first mortgage on the property is under the control of David Husman, chairman of Equibase Capital Group LLC. Husman has been sued by Jam Productions Inc. and Joseph Freed & Associates LLC, who acquired a second mortgage and claim Husman has unlawfully refused their offers to pay off $1.3 million due on the first mortgage.

Which means that nobody actually knows who owns it. It'll still be years before anything at all is done. And then Live Nation will realize how expensive it's going to be to renovate, bla bla bla.

Abandoned building limbo, too expensive to renovate, too expensive to demo.

There is a caretaker who's at the theater every day. We had a chat, apparently you can't get in legally without a court order, since it's been ruled unfit for occupancy.

And Jam, that's why we love you.

I lived in Chicago for 19 years before moving to California a while back. As it is, I'm back in Chicago maybe 6-7 times a year.

If you want, next time I'm back I can show you some places, though at this point I don't know what has been demo'ed and what hasn't...

Really, if you haven't checked out the link earlier www.futurespeak.net/bb, you should. The folks there are friendly, usually. And we don't necessarily hate UER, most of us just prefer to keep things a little more subtle.

Not everyone hates them, I love explorers

I just moved from Pilsen to Andersonville and it's quite a drastic difference in how many buildings are abandoned in contrast of north to south. It also seems like there's a pretty big difference in security too. The police are all on the hunt for crackheads breaking into things and such, which is rather unfortunate. On the south side they just don't care.

Speaking of police... There's this abandoned police station way out west, near Cicero and Chicago Ave. I wonder if anyone's ever been there...

You might want to ask Curious George about that place.
