Early Fall visit to Southwest Michigian Tuberculosis Sanatorium

There have been a few posts on this place so far. I am not a full member yet so I don't know if it's in the LDB but I am sure it is. The first time me and my former exploring companion went to this place we did not know it had been bricked up. I live in central Illinois so this was a 4 hour drive for me. Although it was not completely wasted and I got some decent pics of the exterior, needless to say we were a bit disappointed. So a few weeks later we brought another friend of ours who happened to have a 16 foot foldable ladder. We got in!

This is what the place looked like during it's operation. This of course is not my pic but the rest are.

And present day.

This is taken right inside the small hole in the fence which is all around the perimeter. The location of this place couldn't be better in my opinion. Right on top of a hill overlooking the whole city.

You can see where the huge trucks came in to brick it all up.

Other people had tried to use smaller ladders but they are just not tall enough.

The rooms overlooking the courtyard and basketball court.

Ahh we finally get in. I couldn't ask for a better setting. A perfect overcast day. Great to explore abandoned mental/TB hospitals.

These next few shots are taken in the basement of the building. Mind you it was pitch black and we only had small flashlights. We packed light. Thankfully my camera has a decent flash on it.

Down this hallway was completely flooded. We constantly heard the drip of water and it seemed a pipe had burst down this hallway. It seemed strage that water still was running in this building.

Looks like someone had tried to burn the place down. This building however, is still packed with asbestos.

Now we are on the main floor.

The front entrance...from the inside.

There were quite a few very personal files scattered all around.

This room was only burnt halfway up. How do ya suppose that happens?

My favorite hallway shot.

The sign on the door to this room said Children's room.

Here we start getting into the first floor of patient rooms.

Someone had lived here for awhile. The whole place had a very sour musty stentch to it.

We re-enter the light.

From the roof overlooking Kalamazoo.

Thanks for looking at my pictures.

Great photos. I wish mke still had some hospitals to explore.

About that room that was 'half burnt.' I'd guess it wasn't burnt, that looks like smoke damage, since smoke rises to the ceiling the walls closer to the ground likely wouldn't have been affected.

Oh now that place is just awesome looking. Wish I had an abandoned hospital to explore, they all look so cool.

Love that first picture, all the beautiful backsides out for display

And...As much as I hate all idiot n00b graffiti (and this building has some prime examples) the "Dead People Storage Only (No Frozen Foods)" actually made me laugh out loud.

Won't you help me, Mr. Jesus, Won't you tell me, if you can

Very cool. When was the last time they used this place and in its final days was it still strictly for tuberculosis patients? It seems pretty modern. At one point here in Ohio tuberculosis was so wide spread that it was a state mandate for every county to have their own tuberculosis ward. Once the disease had been wiped out the majority of the ones here in Ohio were demolished and torn down, however many were renovated into children's hospitals.

Hi, I am new to both UE and the UER website... I however was recently in the TB hospital and spent many hours exploring the 45,000 square foot structure! This page shows the history of the building, which dates to 1954, accounting for the newer appearance and high presence of asbestos: http://www.kpl.gov...thwest%20Unit.aspx Also this site has some facts nestled among the most likely fictional material: http://www.haunted...zoo_sanitorium.cfm

The building was in use until the early 1990s. Papers in the building help confirm this. The site now appears to be owned by Western Michigan University, who has posted signs around the grounds declaring it WMU Property and an Asbestos hazard.

I enjoyed crawling inside the tiny access into the inside of the boiler in the basement. See the included photos.

Thanks, Rotes! It was a very tight fit. I was apparently not the first person to go in, since someone had painted "get in" on the back wall inside. It was quite surreal inside. I wouldn't recommend it for anyone who is claustrophobic lol There were two of these boilers in the room, and many steam and water pipes. One of the nicest parts of the facility imo.

Awesome pics! I finally get to see the inside of this place. Me and my friend were unaware it was bricked up when we went as well.

You can get in easily with a 12 foot ladder. Or if you're little enough to squeeze through the part the above poster is talking about.

Yeah we thought about that, but we tend to be more opportunistic when exploring. If we have to haul a bunch of junk in just to get in...we're just too lazy to do that.

About the water pipe bursting, I've seen videos where the exterior lights were still on at night. Perhaps it has power and water. In your photos, it appears it's been cleaned up a little bit more since we went. (There were fresh tire tracks when we were there too) Wonder if WMU has plans for the place?

I will be going to this place someday very soon. I have all the information I need... even a satellite image of the grounds. A friend of mine lives not far from it so that will aid in my mission... any other advice to offer? Just need a good 12ft ladder to get up high enough to climb over... what's the risk of being seen/caught?

I think they stopped using it in the late 80's or early 90's. It would be awesome to see WMU do something with it. Now that I have explored it abandoned i would kinda like to see what could be done with it. Plus, it is such a magnificent location it would be a shame to just tear it down.

I do have some advice for you going out there. First, bring a mask. There is lots and lots of dust/asbestos particals floating around especially in the basement. Second, you will need at LEAST a 12 foot ladder. Ours was I think 12 and we barely were able to reach. Third, bring big flashlights. As for being seen, there is a small hole in the perimeter fence just small enough to squeeze through so i suggest driving around the buidling to find the whole before getting out of your car. Once you are through the fence quickly go around to the backside of the hospital. Once there you will no longer have a risk of being seen.

when me and my friend were there, we walked around the whole thing looking for a way in, when we were out front, a neighbor across the street saw us, looked...then went back to working on his lawn.

I think they see people in there all the time and don't really care, it would be WMU and the police you'd have to worry about.

I am hesitant to post detailed information because I don't want to attract unsavory people into this interesting building, but lets just say that when I visited this place... you won't be needing that ladder anymore. Someone created a way now to walk right into the place, although I have no clue how they did it without making so much noise as to attract attention.

That place is great, creepy as hell at night. Have you seen any heavy machinery around there? Those tracks kind of looks like are getting ready for something. I would like to take another trip inside next time I travel to Michigan.

He stated earlier that the tire tracks are from the trucks that came in to brick up the ground level.

Latest update: The missing section in the fence which people were using to get into the place has been patched with fencing. I doubt it will last, I assume someone will tear it apart the way they did the first time. However, the fact that they did this makes me wonder if they have/will also be attempting to reseal the most recent walk-in entrance people had been using.
