Many reasons.

1) Like Whitby Psych, a new facility is built rendering the old one obsolete.

2) Companies go bankrupt and there's no one else to take over the building.

3) See #2. Assets (buildings etc) are tied up until the court decides what to do with them.

4) Owner living in house dies or winds up in old age home. No one to care for the house etc.

As mentioned, many reasons Marko. These are just the four that I can think of off the top of my head.

Kinda sad really but that's a fact of life.

Gone for a while. Be back when I'm back.

In the west things go abandoned for many of the same reasons. Mines lose funding because there's nothing left to mine, or they get to a point where it's more expensive to remove the mineral than it's worth. Casinos die because of bigger better casinos. And entire towns die because of lack of supplies, the local mine shuts down, etc.

In the case of psych hospitals, in patient treatment is too expensive for insurance companies most of the time. Additionally, a lot of mental diseases can be better handled with medication rather than intensive therapy.

For industry, the market changes. What was once made out of steel is now made out of plastic, places have moved to other countries or other parts of the country.

A building may have serious asbestos or mold issues, making the cost of refurbishment more expensive than the owner feels it's worth.

I guess you could say the economy's loss is our gain.

It is in truth not for glory, nor riches, nor honours that we are fighting, but for freedom.

a lot of shops and factories close because companies are realizing that its more efficient to run one giant facility than a bunch of little ones

A few reasons from Asia:

-In Japan, there are a lot of abandoned places in the countryside that were successful up until some time (I think the mid-'90s) when mass transportation became much more affordable and people could travel halfway around the country. That's why there are so many abandoned amusement parks there too.
-In Korea:
-most places are abandoned so they can be demolished and new buildings can be built overtop; usually it takes a long time
-one or two sites have been closed down due to accidental death.

A lot of reasons:

-they have been bad, bad buildings
-they can
-they are crack babies
-they're dorks
-they smell
-they are being punished

why do you always ask questions like this?

Also during the late 70's and early 80's, mental health leaders thought it was a lot more humane to put patients out in to the "real world". That resulted in a huge increase in the homeless population unable to maintain their medications as they had been in the hospital.

EDIT: Ironic how a large amount of those people end up living in abandoned buildings.

Well, I think you're being a little too kind by not mentioning the real source of the whole movement to oust the mentally ill and close the hospitals....
