| | | Mount View High School 3814 Carey Road Victoria, B. C. The Municipality of Saanich designated the 1931 school building as a heritage site. The owners of the building — School District 61 (Greater Victoria) — allowed the physical structure to deteriorate. I snapped these photos during her final moments in August 2007. It was a beautiful building. What a crime. - MJPC

A classic sad example of 'demolition by neglect' Do no maintenance, leave no heat on, don't fix the roof... Sure enough the building starts to look shabby. Then the dramatic word 'eyesore' is tossed around, it's dangerous, a blight, useless, too far gone to fix... Sick. Because the Mayor and his disciples have dollar signs in their eyes. When new condos/Wal Mart/Starbucks is on that site, they will reap the property tax benefits. This will put flowers in planters, and make Victoria (Saanich in this case) all purdy. Fine, but at what cost? Of course as well, pay raises to the semi competent aldermen, (alderpersons) will benefit from the 'increased tax base'. I climbed all through that structure as it was being recycled. Took photos too. It was built so well, you would be amazed. Some floor rot, all fixable. A shame for the heritage loss. Good that they did recycle, and hard working people got employment, but the old main building should have been saved. Saanich sucks and has no heritage vision. Good post, I like the old memory pic at the end. Pardon my rant. Cheers. A.
My sister is Charlotte Light and Dark. Who am I? Farewell and thank you... "I was doing something that I thought could have some impact someday. In many ways, it's really these photographs that kept me going creatively." Dennis Hopper |
