Idea!

After the UE Meet yesterday (3 of us, yay!) I was intrigued by an idea that Tamo brought up - a UE camp out! Would anyone be up for an overnight-er somewhere?

By coincidence, I missed the last meet because I was out camping. I would be down with that.

Tjs - We waited for you Sunday! You RSVPd that you were coming out, but we never saw you

I've messaged you a few times about meeting up, but never hear back - we full members go out quite a bit, join in sometime.

what's this about a burial site on McNab's? I've been on the island a lot of times but never found that.

Also, just out of curiosity, has anyone gotten into that tunnel by the large fort? The one with the circular grate over it, looks like some damaged stairs.
I haven't been there in a few years, so maybe this has changed...

The burial site is the McNabs' family cemetery. There's a burial site on Lawlor Island for cholera victims as well. I don't know where this circular grate is, but I know of a square cage-like door is welded in place to keep some people out of one of the tunnels. From what I can tell, it's just another powder/shell magazine for the RML's.

Have faith only in those who you trust. And hold who you trust close to you for you have no idea when you will need them most.

Nootz, that may be the one I'm talking about. Memory fails me on the particulars on the door, but I still wish I could get down there!

Where is Lawlor Island? I'm not familiar with the name.

not sure where to post this it doesnt seem there was a thread specifically for the tunnels out to mcnabbs but i have found a bit of info that might clear up a bit of the mystery as to why people believe there were tunnels and it seems...there might actually be...

"There is no subterraneous passage for men, as local tradition so fondly believes, leading either to the harbour or to George's Island. There is, however, a large and carefully constructed brick sewer which connects with the 12" main proceeding from the closets (ie lavatories) on each side of the northern sally-port in the west curtain and passing around by way of the northern ditch; from beneath the bottom of the ditch at the redan salient it leads down the glacis to the head of Buckingham Street, where it connects with a large stone drain (on the site of an ancient stream); thence it passes downhill until it reaches the harbour via the Ordnance Yard (it it uncertain whether the Citadel drainage is carried by the drain under the Yard gate, or by another under the southern part of the Yard). A man, by stooping, can pass through this capacious conduit, but it was not constructed for the passage of troops in time of emergency."

There has been argument as to the validity of this sewer, however, a first tunnel was discovered in 1919, a second tunnel in 1938 under Duke Street, and a third tunnel in 1976 on the corner of Grafton and Prince Streets. A fourth tunnel was discovered in 1995 under Sackville Street.

Actually, according to the book, the sewer tunnel has apparently disappeared, but the author explored it anyway, and reported that he thinks there is a modern service tunnel filled with power lines in the same location. He suspects the service tunnel was built within the original brick sewer.

I don't really think there's any tunnels. I can't there being steam tunnels between the school and the hospital because the school was built in the early 40s and the Infirmary was built in I think late 90s or early 2000s to replace the Old Halifax Infirmary. But there could be a bomb shelter. Don't know.
I'd be interested in taking a look though, for sure.

HRM, along with the provincial and federal governments, has also developed larger initiatives. The Community Energy Project involves the construction of a natural gas-fired combined heat and electrical power plant in Halifax. Waste energy from the plant would be used to provide heat to universities and hospitals through an underground distribution system.
...maybe these facilities included schools in the area to which may have been the origin of this "story"
