| | | | Banks < on 12/8/2007 7:15 PM >
| | | Today it just crossed my mind that I saw a bank that was going to be knocked down a few years back, and I wanted to explore it, even though I didn't know what "exploring" was. My question is: Has anyone ever explored a bank? Any pictures?

I might have a few more but none that are active. Im having trouble finding an active bank that doesnt have good locks, and an active alarm system.

One of the most interesting features of this vault, it is hollow underneath, and along the back and one side. There were "slots" on the sides, with mirrors positioned at the bottom. This allowed the guards to look under the vault to see if anyone was tunneling in! There were 4 vaults downstairs and 2 more upstairs.
For scale, I'm 6' 2"
The entire inside was "caged" off.
Another interesting feature. The large duct on the left was turned so it fit into the doorhole, bags of money were then "dropped" into a receptacle on the exterior of the building, and they would slide directly into the vault. This insured the money was not exposed until it was inside the vault.(the small duct on the right was used for ventilation) This door goes into the same vault as pictured above. It's 36" thick!
The front of it.
This is the cage the money drops into. You can see the round opening behind me.
I'm a little confused with this, I guess you just have to wait?
Nice machine work.
This is the "truck turner". So the armored trucks didn't have to back out, they parked here and it turned them around.

Mmmm, the contents of that bank vault would be quite valuable in the right markets.

| | | I came across this little beauty of a bank one day... some say it was held up by Bonnie and Clyde, however I found an article on the interwebz that says it's the only bank in the area at the time that WAS NOT held up by Bonnie and Clyde.

This bank was about the size of an average size bedroom. I peeked in but all I saw was random junk laying around. This bank is in someones front yard. They use it for storage of their lawn equipment. I didn't even see a vault. If there was one there, which I'm sure there was, it was either gone now or covered in junk.
Oh, and nice joke btw. I get it... hehe. [last edit 12/14/2007 5:55 AM by Happiedaze - edited 1 times]

Both of these two vaults are located in the basement of the same building. The building is in the process of being converted to condos and most everything has been stripped. The humidity is bad enough here to do this kinda damage in less than twenty years. According to dated materials, I think this place shut down around 84, 85.
Stepping into the main vault is like walking into a collision of echoes. The room is roughly thirty feet long and twenty five feet wide, about twelve high. Even whispering for thirty seconds straight would turn into indistinguishable rambling noise. So Filo and I get the brilliant idea to try out our gregorian chant style. Straight up old skool. We spent nearly thirty minutes just trying different harmonizing sounds and "singing" before getting worried that somebody might actually hear this horrible caterwauling and alert the sound authority. Nothing of the sort happened. Just goes to show that not only are the general public unobservant, they don't listen either. We returned with my computer and a mic a few nights later, as well as a third set of vocal chords. The recording is not the highest quality, but extremely funny... well to us anyways. Again, another half hour of making the loudest racket we could and no one seemed to notice.
All the vault hardware still intact but heavily rusted...
And this was also one of the city's civil defense storage locations. Came across hundreds of tins of crackers and carbohydrate supplement (candy). All of it dated 1963. Good old Cold War preparedness. [last edit 12/14/2007 8:36 AM by natxtron - edited 1 times]
