| | Finding the history... < on 11/27/2007 8:57 PM >
| | | There is this place that I have recently explored that I have been unable to find info on (history, who owned it, when did it open...). I did, however, come across the name of a guy who used to work there, who would know oodles of info. I found a key chain that belonged to him when I was exploring, it had his name on it (not to mention all the paperwork found). He's even listed in our local phone book. Problem is, I have it on good faith that this guy had a terrible accident while he worked there...he was burned in a flash while welding. I am looking for advice/ suggestions on how to ask him about the place, especially if he's a bit "touchy" about the subject. I don't want to "intrude" (if that's the right word) but am very curious. How would you (other UE'ers) handle this situation? Would you ask/call anyway or just leave it be? If he asked you why you had an interest in this place, what would you tell him? Would you ask about his accident?

| | | Try the city archives for the building date, etc. Say to him, "I understand its a difficult subject for you, but I'm curious about the history of blah blah blah and was wondering if you could tell me what you know about it."

| | | Unless you knew the guy before, he's probably not going to be too happy to talk to you about the place, especially given his history with it. I wouldn't want random people calling *me* up about some place I used to work where I got horribly injured, after all. You might have to feel the situation out. If the guy is nice, he might be understanding about your curiosity. If he is angry, or bitter, though, you might want to leave it alone.

I would call him up and let him know that you heard that he worked there, and if so, would he be willing to answer some questions you have about the place. I would not bring up the issue of his having an accident. If it's an issue, let him bring it up, and you'll soon know if he's "touchy" with it. Lot's of people have industrial accidents, and I'm betting it is probably not going to be an issue. After all, it's not his accident history you seek, but rather the industrial site/place. Let me or the forum know what happens if you decide to contact him. Good luck.

I completely agree with you, Just call him up and say that you found out through old records that he worked there and that you're just interested in the building's history and ask him if he would answer some questions or just tell you a little about when it opened, when it closed, and what it was like when it was operational.
