| | | | Smithville Factory < on 11/19/2007 8:45 PM >
| | | Last weekend, a friend and I were wandering around the tiny town of Smithville, ON, and came across a lovely, rusting factory that may or may not still be in use.
We were looking for another location, but as we couldn't find it, we decided to stop in and poke our noses around wherever we could. The doors that can be seen from the first picture contained "chemical grade chrome ore", and "chrome ore" (I guess some of it was inferior? *lol*) Though, it seemed as if different products may be produced in different parts of the factory. We're still not sure what the name of it was, or what it's officially supposed to be. It was actually pretty easy to get around - mostly we stayed outside and looked into the open outbuildings.
But there were a few "strategically unlocked" doors as well. Surprisingly, ones that you wouldn't expect to be unlocked were.
Everything inside was pretty dusty, though it seems like things are still in use from time to time. There were a few lights on here and there, and we tried to stay away from those doors, just in case. Among other discoveries that included a clipboard from 1996, piles of pigeon feathers, and random large sacks of pottery, there were several weird machines:
And, happily, the roof was also highly accessible:
It was a fun trip... definitely worth checking out if you're in the area. For those who are so inclined, all 103 of my pictures can be found here: http://pics.livejo...l/gallery/00031dcd

| | | It was a random find, actually... we were literally driving by, disappointed by not being able to find something else... and it was sitting right there. Of course we had to go in!

| | | Cool. I remember checking this place out a while ago. It still looked a bit too active at the time even though the place had supposedly shut down in 1998. Nice to be able to see what it looks like inside now. And just in case you were wondering, they used to produce heat-resistant products for use in steel, glass and cement making facilities.

| | | Very generally, its East of Hamilton, West of St. Catherines, South of Grimsby, and North of whatever the hell is on the South side of Smithville I have been to Smithville quite a few times in the past year on calls for work, but I have never even seen this place!

| | | Sorry for not replying in so long! Wrecked my car, blahblahblah... Anyway! I'm glad you guys are all enjoying the pictures. ^_^ & thanks for the welcomes! Micro: Thanks for the info... we had no idea what they made. It looks like some parts of the factory might or might not still be in use (some parts had lights on, for example) HairytheTaco: It's north of Wainfleet. *lol* If you know where the Giant Tiger and the Tim Hortons are... it's near that.
