| | Cupertino: Hanson Cement Factory < on 11/13/2007 11:01 PM >
| | | I’m not sure if anyone in the South Bay has checked this place out, but it certainly is interesting. The Hanson Permanente Cement factory (formerly Kaiser Permanente) was the brainchild of mogul Henry Kaiser and was the key in production of the Lake Shasta Dam. The site is huge, covering several thousand acres with all sorts of goodies. The site is active, with a rail yard, abandoned warehouses, a deep pit, fire roads, elevators, conveyors and more. Our most recent exploration finally brought us into the old warehouse which is an amazingly huge multilevel structure. There are offices, labs, chemical storage rooms, boilers, ovens and huge open rooms. I cannot begin to say how huge it all is. From top to bottom it is about 4 stories with a basement and several hundred feet long. It appears the building was abandoned in 1990 (calendars point to that) and much of the original stuff was left in. Some offices still have desks and filing cabinets, there are still labs pretty much intact, but the structure is deteriorating. Research shows it was built in the mid-1930s as the plant originally opened. Anyways, a very cool place that is worth checking out. Entry is a little tough because it is active with cameras and a guard, but it is easily accomplished. Sorry about picture quality in some. It was pitch black and we had no tripod and only one weak flashlight. Next time we will be better prepared.

| | | Oooh, very nice. I think I have some idea where that is, but I did not realize that the area was so huge. Looking at your photos makes me want to go. Could I come along when you go out again? Or if not...what time of day would be best for entry? I wonder if there is a time when everyone is on lunch break and it is easier to get in.

| | | FYI, for those really interested... The rail line noted is the sub-division or the spurr that is part of the Permanente Line which connects to downtown. It used to be a part of the SPCRR. The rail line is still active today and operates 1-2 times a week via a Union Pacific U33C Mainline or sometimes a Union Pacific NW1500 Yard Switcher. You can figure out the rest... I have maps and more info available via PM only. -R
