I know this was touched on well over a year ago, but here's a little update to the boarded up houses on Bloor St West, Oakmount, and Pacific...

Has anyone made it inside? (not sure if its in the full member DB )

Community council defers demolition application - again

An application to demolish a block of houses along Bloor Street West between High Park Avenue and Keele Street was deferred yet again by Etobicoke-York Community Council Monday.
It was initially deferred in March and again in June of this year.

WJ Properties intends to build a condominium, but has yet to submit plans to the City of Toronto. Asked why it wants to tear down 13 houses on Bloor Street West, Oakmount Road and Pacific Avenue before outlining its intentions, the company's CFO Perry Fryers said simply: "We're in the process of dealing with a developer."

The 13 houses proposed for demolition-1844, 1846, 1850, 1852 and 1854 Bloor St. W.; 6, 8, 10, 12 and 14 Oakmount Rd. and 37 Pacific Ave.- contain about 25 units. Twelve of the houses are vacant and have been boarded up for more than a year. According to information from the city's planning department, "a lack of investment" and ongoing maintenance of the buildings resulted in significant disrepair. Demolition is a means to reduce ongoing maintenance costs until a proposal is considered.

Linda Sepp, who rents the upper two floors with her daughter signed a lease and moved in the spring of 1991. Her mother Eda rents the main floor of the building.

"It's falling apart," she said. "The roof is leaky. It needs to be replaced."

Sepp also described, in a letter to community council, how a new gas stove was installed in 2003 without a range hood while holes in the ceiling and cupboards on the first floor to accommodate plumbing repairs were not fixed. Since then, she said, gas fumes have made their way into her upstairs apartment.

Although they did receive notice that WJ Properties was seeking a demolition permit from the city and they were being evicted, Eda Sepp said she and her daughter have been unable to find separate affordable apartments at similar rents.

"We're not very happy with this, if you can imagine," said Eda Sepp.

According to the city's Official Plan, rental houses need to be saved.

It states that: "As long as there is no new supply to meet the demand for rental housing, our existing stock of affordable rental housing is an asset that must be preserved." The document likens rental units to heritage buildings.

"We need to do all we can to prevent losses," it states.

Eda Sepp, an art historian and architecture professor, said she is not opposed to a new structure along Bloor Street West, but she would like it to be a good fit for the neighbourhood, especially since it faces High Park.

"I would hope that it would look nice in the district," she said.

That article makes very little sense. What building are they talking about? What needs repairs and is leaky? What about gas fumes? What?

According to information from the city's planning department, "a lack of investment" and ongoing maintenance of the buildings resulted in significant disrepair. Yeah, no shit... They've been sitting vacent for close to 2 years. What does disrepair have to do with anything? They're going to be demolished for condos.

So they're only going through all of this NOW, after all the houses have been sold and sitting empty for ages? What the fuck is going on here?

Fuck this stupid city.

Who pissed in your Corn Flakes?

One of the houses is still occupied, hence the 'complaints' ...but I do agree, there's nothing they can do about it now... just move people!
