That's a pretty intense place. A friend living over there told me all the good UE sites are out in the countryside because stuff gets torn down too quickly inside the cities. Is that true?

Same in Korea. I was taking pictures of my wife at an abandoned university at night, and she told me "If you ever see anything that might be a ghost in any of your pictures, just delete it and never tell me about it." She's a brave person but the idea of ghosts terrifies her. This is good though. You can tell people you're a ghost hunter and they'll let you go anywhere. |
Let's just make sure that everyone's favorite ghost hunter doesn't find out about this.

in japan, due to the very small amount of space in the cities, when a business is closing, the place will be soon demolished to build new stuff... so only mine, hotel spa in the mountain or old village are still available it s rare to see a cool ue site in Tokyo, even if Kuroneko (that i don t unfortunatly know) found some.... sometime promoter buy a package of old house to build huge mansion... they really try their best to let the past behind them i guess it s the same in Korea....

It's a bit different actually. The urban renewal process is always ongoing, and Koreans aren't interested in the past either. But there seem to be inefficiencies, and often sites will be left abandoned for years, right in the middle of Seoul waiting for demolition. One of my main sites right now is an entire university campus not five minutes from my home, right in the middle of the city. There's also a department store that was abandoned midway through construction near the airport and left sitting for around five years so far. I don't know why they do it. Never been out in the countryside, but I hear there's an abandoned town somewhere.

Glad to hear that your ok, and I constantly think about this because I explore ALOT alone, and with alot of the 80+ year old buildings I keep finding myself inside I always wonder if this is the day that the floor doesn't feel like being there anymore. by the way AWESOME pictures from japan, I wouldn't want to ever stop as well.

It is a bit different actually. This is kind of right and results in stuff in rural areas staying un-touched for decades, but often (not always) stuff in central Tokyo and Osaka stays abandoned for five to ten years. As an example, the land used for Roppongi 1-chome was filled with houses for almost ten years before they built Izumi Gardens, Roppongi 6-chome for about five, Toranomon is still waiting after ten years for developers. Shinjuku has parts at least five years abandoned, and some other stuff in Shibuya for two - three years. Gunkan apato lasted less than a year though, and Dojunkai in Harajuku maybe just six months. As you said, the UE DB has a few places, you just need to know where to look! Damn, that sounds like a nasty fall too. I'll tell you about my one and only privately. Still hurts... Neko. | | | Glad you're alright. I have been lucky not to experience any major injuries while exploring. I've only come close to falling through a floor once. Was exploring an old theatre, walking through the rotted wooden floor offices in the front of the place. I knew it was pretty dangerous to be walking through, so I was checking my every step just in case. What I didn't account for was the floor breaking through under and behind me after I stepped onto it. Luckily both my legs went through and I landed crotch first on a support beam. Otherwise I would have taken a tumble into the lobby below. I don't think I would have gotten injured too badly, and I was right in the middle of downtown across from a police station... so if I did get hurt, I wouldn't have to go far. Still, for that second where the floor broke and I fell through, my heart was racing and I felt completely helpless.

| | | i havent explored much in the way of old buildings so my experience with rotting floors has been zero so far...none the less i am always weary of my footing when exploring
photo by Orfi going through the underground ventilation system just recently...the vent was metal as you'd expect but not designed, i imagine, to be walked through at one point i knew i was walking thru a section which had a a train tunnel below it with high voltage power lines...... so i placed my feet with due care nevertheless excellent location.....we take risks in hope of reward [last edit 11/19/2007 3:09 AM by hatsumi - edited 1 times]

| | | Here's an accident waiting to happen. LangP and I saw this guy go in the front door, but we didn't really think much about it until we went around to the back and found half the building missing. When the guy saw me taking pictures he waved and then pointed us out to his friends nearby.

Been there, done that, same theatre. Same with a crapload of people I know. I nearly fell down one of the holes into the silo's at the Malt Plant. Wandering around without a flashlight is never a good idea.
